After researching my modle of PS2 (v9 SCPH-50001) I found out that I have one of the worst possible modles and now it wont play games because it gets the dredded "Disc Read Error" message. It has played flawlessly for the past year until today after I got done playing an emulator on it. When I stopped by quiting to the main menu, the emulator froze my PS2. I reset the system and it hasn't read a disc since. I cleaned the lens with cleaning (pure) alcohol and a lint free cotton swab. When cleaning the lens with alcohol failed I read a few guides on my partucular model about how to adjust the gears for the laser's height and position, but unlike most PS2s with one white cog my model has two. I did the best I could messing around with it for a couple hours trying as many combinations of those flywheels as I could but to no avail the "Disc Read Error" remains, so I reset teh cogs in their original positions.
Have any of you had any experience with this partucular model, possibly calibrating it to work properly? Any info on fixing my v9 will definitly help, and Ive read many of the common online guides already. I don't want to be on my third PS2, but if the outcome seems grim then I will admit defeat and buy another.
Thanks in advance.
-Josh

Version 9s use a chip controlling the laser's focus coils(the LA chip) that feeds the focus coils a dangerous voltage(12V). Chances are your LA chip got damaged or fried because it overheated, your laser's ribbon cable has deteriorated up to the point where it knocks out the chip and makes your laser quit working(shorts it), or your focus coils have burnt out(causing massive damage to the laser). You need a Romeo MOD(if you replace the chip). Google it. Otherwise, get a Version 7(SCPH-39001-this is the best fat PlayStation 2 out there, and is also the best PlayStation 2 ever made).

Yup, I found all of this out after I fried the system. *sigh* Should have researched more. I think I might buy a premodded v7 from teammodders. I see Steimy recommending them to the many people with PS2 issues so I think I'll take his advice and buy a DSM4 premodded console.
Thank you for the reply Ace.

yep, i sure do. I am a moderator on their forums so when i needed things done i started letting the guys there do all my work.
They do a great job and stand behind the work they do unlike so many other modding shops. But don't take my word for it, just go to the forums and look at the install pictures in the PS2 section, and also at the bottom of the forums at the site feedback section.
I have not had anyone i told about the site come back to me with anything bad to say about their system.

Thanks guys, I figure I'll jam a large capacity hard drive into the v7 I get and back up my favorite games. I'll just bypass the whole laser thing all together. =\
