Hi, I own a v4 PS2 (SCPH 35001). Lately it's taken longer to load games to I'm considering to play from HDD. From the faqs here the hardwares I need are:
- Network adapter
- Compatible HDD
- Swap Magic
Is this right?
My PS2 isn't chipped, although I got a little SBOX thingy to play back up PS1 games.
Also, I live in Australia but own an NTSC U/C PS2. Is there any difference in network adapters or any one will do? Thanks.

First to play backups off the HDD, you would need HDloader or HDAdvance to backup and play them from the HDD. Swap magic is to play backup Disc. Here is the link for HDadvance. http://www.hdadvance.com/index.htm

You dont need Swap Magic. That is only if you intend to play backups.
Since you have the old style (fat) ps2, you need:
-A compatabile hard drive. http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list&v_brand=&v_modelnum=4G160J8&v_...
-Network adaptor.
-HD loader or HD advance. (I believe the newest version of hd advance supports up to 300GB drives, this may be true for hd loader but im not sure.)

One more thing, download Winhiip, or HD Dump, also.
These programs allow you to format your new hard drive for ps2, plus it copies games from your pc's dvd-drive to your HD. (You install the HD to your computer.)
THis saves wear and tear on the ps2's laser, which is crappy to start with. Plus you can copy games much faster this way.

Thanks, Limelight. Your info is very useful, I was on the verge on buying swap magic. One more question, all network adapters are the same right? I saw a couple in ebay, thinking of buying them.

Err, I got kinda confused. HD Advance is the pressed version of HD Loader, right? So, if I burned HDLoader on my own, can I use it? I have neither mod chip nor swap magic.
Also, I've heard about PS2 exploit using an original PS1 game so that you can use program on a memory card. But how do I put the program on the memory card?
Thanks in advance for any answers. :)

There is no possible way a burned copy of Swap Magic/HD loader/HD advance will work on ps2. None. You MUST buy a pressed copy of it.
The ps2 looks for authentic codes on the dvd/cd when you load it. When you copy one of the above programs, you lose it. There is NO WAY to copy it and make it work.
I've checked out the exploit, and it looks like more trouble than its worth. It would be nice to have, sure, but id rather just put the hd loader disc in and be done with it. Its only going to load for a few seconds anyway, so its not that big a deal on your laser.
Here's some info on HD Advance, which is what i am going to get.
http://www.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_whatis.htm
And you can buy it here for $30 shipped:

I see. So I need to buy either an original HDadvance or an original Swap Magic with HDLoader. Is that right?

I set up a memory card exploit for my dad's old (fat) ps2.
Pretty much I downloaded a program called the independence compiler (grab it at sksapps.com under the memory card section) and downloaded the latest copy of hdloader (last time I checked it was .8b, also grab at sks under the hdd section).
The compiler is very easy to understand but you do need to micky rig a 'slide tool' for your ps2 out of something like an old credit card or i.d. (search for the picture here I know it's around).
Also, once your done burning the compiler disc, like what was stated above, you will not be able to boot it up by itself, you'll need swap magic.
Once you have all this (assuming you already have a PS1 game as is required to do the exploit) you pretty much pop in the swap magic disc (you need to unscrew the disc tray front before hand, just flip your ps2 upside down while the tray is out and you'll see it in the middle of the drive tray) and wait for the 'load program' menu button to pop up. Then you use your slide tool (DON'T PRESS THE EJECT BUTTON) to pull out the tray and pop in the exploit disc you burned.
Then, assuming all has went well and you have enough free space on your memory card a screen should pop up and a couple seconds later it should say all files copied or something like that. You're done, put back together your PS2 (unless you plan to use your swap magic discs frequently in which case leave off the front tray) and pop in your PS1 disc, it will load as normal then the screen will flash white and you're now at the hdloader screen, congrats.
You might think this sounds a lot more complicated than just buying the retail hdadvance but the difference is that this way you can update the newest hdloader to your memory card everytime it comes out free of charge (plus swapmagic has many more uses).

you might want to read this thread about running apps from your memory card or USB drive using Swap Magic. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/330707#1981371
its cheaper to buy than HD Advance and you can do more with it IMO. of course, I just got Swap Magic a few days ago myself after my Modchip died. so this is all fairly new to me also. THe cheapest place I found to buy SM is at www.Revolution-Sales.com I think it was like $20 for the 3.8 "Coder" version. It took about a week to get to me in Alabama and considering it was shipping USPS from Hawaii I guess that's not to bad.
EDIT: ok.. scratch that.. the Coder version is $24.95 and the regular 3.6 version is $19.50 I think 3.6 will do everything you need. 3.8 just has support for AR Max cheats and such.
