when i go to install my xp pro on my new hdd i keep getting NTLDR missing. so i alway have to install win98 and then install xp after 98 is installed, so i guess my question is , is there a way i can make a backup of my xpro cd and add the ntldr file so when i do a clean install i dont have to go through this 98 to get my xp installed, thanx in advance

I had the same problem.

I had win98SE and a disc that upgraded from WinME to XP.

Somehow and just once it managered to install the upgrade after a dozen trys. When trying a year or to later to refresh OS I found myself with your problem.

I ended up throwing away the upgrade disc and getting the full clean install version and life had got a whole lot easier with XP.

I have found 90% of the time there is nothing wrong with ntldr and it is not missing, instead boot.ini is pointing to the wrong hard drive or partition. Boot.ini in the root tells XP what drive to use for booting.
You will have a line similar to:
multi(X)disk(Y)rdisk(Z)partition(W)\<XP_dir>

The X, Y, Z, and W parameters have the following meaning:
• X is the ordinal number of the adapter and should always be 0
• Y is always 0 (zero) if the ARC path starts with MULTI()
• Z is the ordinal for the disk on the adapter and is usually a number between 0 and 3.
• W is the partition number. All partitions receive a number except for type 5 (MS-DOS Extended) and type 0 (unused) partitions, with primary partitions being numbered first and then logical drives. NOTE: The first valid number for W is 1, as opposed to X, Y, and Z which start at 0 (zero).
So for your first IDE drive, first partion the line would read
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

i use XP disc a never a ntlr whatever problem now

YEAH, I had this problem with xp, must have been my disc aswell because i borrowed 1 off my m8 a full clean1 and it loaded straight away, Plus check your partitions aswell just do clean install on ntfs
should work worth a try :)

try using the recovery console on your xp installation disk. and use the fixboot/fixmbr commands to sort it out
