this might be the wrong forum for this, but i figured that since you all do alot of burning, then this would be the best place. i am thinking of buying a new burner. i was just wondering what in your opinion was the best one to buy. nothing is wrong with the one i have now. just wanting to do some upgrading. the one i have now is about 3 years old and have never had any problems out of it. i do not even know the brand of it, i bought it at fry's. thanks for your opinions

Hi.

My preferences are the BenQ 1655 (Lightscribe) or BenQ 1650 (non LS) or the NEC 3550. My NECs have been very reliable. I have had several over the years and they all still work. The BenQs though are better writers and readers in my opinion. If you're in the U.S., I'd recommend Newegg at newegg.com. They did have the BenQ 1655 for $33 with free shipping. They frequently have something on sale with free shipping.

Edit: added

Unless you buy a NEC, BenQ, Lite-On, or LG, it's a good idea to google the brand/model to find out who actually manufacturers the drive. Many brand name drives are simply rebranded drives from the others above. Stay away from Panasonic/Matshita and Toshiba. Some of the LG drives are problematic as well. I've had bad luck with Lite-On drives so I don't recommend them. Others swear by them.

I love my liteons. I have the 1673 and the 1635. They're very reliable and they are constantly updated. On top of that, they were cheap. I think 50 bucks each.

The recent Sony burners have been Lite-Ons underneath the Sony label.

I think I read somewhere in here that Lite-On is buying BENQ. LOL
I couldn't make up my mind between the BenQ1655 or the Litey SHM-165H6S so I bought both. They both compliment eachother nicely.

I swear by my Liteons. I love that they handle all discs and that they're updated frequently.

My only gripe is that there's no lightscribe ability--but that's only because it wasn't available at the time of purchase. That's the only way it can be better.
