Hey Guys,

Recently my copies have been freezing up and stopping on me. I am using Shrink 3.2.0.15 I guess that?s the latest one, and Any DVD 6.0.3.1 to back up my movies. I don?t know if it?s my burner (Mad Dog) or the disc (Memorex +R) or Shrink? I am not sure how to pin point the problem.

Thanks

Hi goodspins
Think you biggest problem is the memorex. They use several bad manufacturers.
Burn speed can also play a part.
What's your burn speed?
What's the rated speed on the Memorex? You might have gotten a decent manufacturer.
Better to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan only Sony or Fuji.

Also check and make sure your drives firmware is up to date.

The Memorex is 16X and the Mad Dog is set to (Fastest). Should I set it to 16X ?

With these burn at 8x or lower - the + r 16x memorex have a few manufacturers.

I'm thinking you have Nero since you're using Shrink (yes that's the latest & last version). Pop a blank in the drive. Then open Nero's smart start and go to ToolKit>Info Tool>disc tab. The manufacturer info will be listed there.
Post back the manufacturer.
Also post back the make, model and firmware version of the mad dog. You can find this info on the drive tab in info tool. Let's make sure that's up to date too.

The original poster has a simular set up to mine. I also have a freezing problem, Using Fuji 16X, DVD+R, Taiwan, 4.7 GB still have 20 in the cake and would like to know how I change the write speed. Is it something that is changed at the time you are to write the DVD? Is it something you change on DVD Shrink? Searched around on Nero and found reading speed. It is set at 16X. Is that a good speed for reading?

Windows XP 5.1.2600
Pentium III 500 MHz
256 mb

Nero Burning Rom 6, 3, 1, 25

DirectX 9.0b

DVD Shrink 3.2

Thank you in advance for any suggestions

And yes, I am very new to all this!

@granny2

open Nero. new compilation. select "dvd video". select the "burn" tab from the menus in the center of that window. there on the right you will see "write speed", with a drop down menu. if you have placed your blank dvd in the burner prior to opening this menu, it will give you the options for speeds for burning that particular disk. sounds more complicated that it is to find it... if i could i would post a screen capture... but don't seem to be able to post a jpeg image... if anyone knows how to do that, i'd appreciate the info... nothing turned up in searches...

@ granny2,

@ surfgeo,
r having trouble doing a screen capture or just posting it?

one way is to sign up for an account with like PhotoBucket, and upload the pic to there website, then copy the IMG at bottom and paste, u have to make the IMG /IMG lower case too.

Sweeeeet!!! I knew it would be something in Nero. I just get stuck on stupid and already know this bargain on the DVD's was my error.

Thanks to both of you! I have been reading this site for quite some time and have learned so much. Very impressed.

@granny2 glad you got it all working!

@300bowler thank you so much! never knew such a thing as photobucket existed! i live a very sheltered life i guess! it took me a couple of tries to get it right, but got it working. you can see that i have an older version of Nero (no recode). very cool. it's so much easier with a question like the one granny2 posed to just post a pic rather than trying to describe it with words. thanks again!

Hey guys I guess my upgrade did not work, I have noticed that when mt recording is done and I turn the disc around to see the data that has been burned on it I notice a hair line gap in the data. I can only assume that is what makes my movie freez. My other disc do not have a gap in the info they are solid, no breaks in the data. could it be my MAD DOG?
if it is I will seek a Plextor recorder what do you think.

@goodspins

have you made non-freezing backups using the same burner and brand of disks? i suggest you definitely get a better brand of disks (verbatim or taiyo yuden for example), if you haven't already. is this a new burner? have the latest firmware? give us a little more detail about exactly what software you are using and what disks.

Hi goodspins
I agree w/ surfgeo. If you are still using those Moser Baer made Memorex that is probably the problem.
The line you see if probably causing the freezing- more media related imho.

Did you try a lower burn speed like 4x for them?

For instore Taiyo Yuden made discs look for made in Japan only Fuji or Sony.
Depending on where you are we can suggest some places to by good media online.

Your AnyDVD/Shrink and Nero combo should be good.

You know what though - if you're in the US (think you are)that 14.99 would a 50 pack spindle of Verbatims from Best Buy this week :)

There are usually weekly specials of the good stuff.
Fuji are on sale too there - 100 for 29.99 just look for made in Japan only - getting hard to find in some areas. Online is the way to go for Taiyo Yudens.

Oh and if that's a new scan from Nero you still have the older firmware.

WOW your right I just looked at my ad. Yea I hear what you are saying about the Verbatims but I am so picky on look, I make my own covers and sometime depending on what Verbatims has as a design can show though. I?ll check them out, and defiantly look for made in Japan.

What do you mean by new scan from Nero you still have the older firmware?

This part from your post above to surfgeo:
The manufacture # is MBIPG101R05
M.D. Type DVD_+R/RWDL Recorder
Read Speed 16X
Write Speed 8.0X
Firmware Version 2F6
Buffer Size: 2MB
Date?

Here's where I buy a lot of my Taiyo Yuden's:
http://supermediastore.com
Usually run good deals -esp w/ free shipping. I get the printable's too and print directly to the dvd. Just need like an Epson R series to do this.

editted to add: the verbs will be made in Taiwan - that's okay - MCC made so good there. The made in Japan is for the Sony & Fuji's - usually they will be made by Taiyo Yuden.
