OK, so I know how to burn movies and encode AVI files to VOB but I had another question. Usually if Im burning a dvdrip Ill just make turn that into .vob's and burn to disc for 1 movie. But Im trying to get the pron movies off my HD and put them on disc. I recently put about 4-5 episodes in Nero and made a menu and everything and it came out looking good. I let Nero transcode for me and it took about 4-5 hours so I went to sleep. Is there anyway I could get more movies on there some how? Should I let Nero Transcode for me or should I be encoding the files into something else with WINAVI?

You don't say anything about the size, length, quality of the originals, or the quality you would like. Simply put, a single-layer (4.7 Gb, 120 min) DVD can handle about 60 minutes of best-quality video and audio, or about 90 mins or so of "very good", "movie-quality". Beyond that, you will have to sacrifice quality in favor of fitting more on a disc. If your files are in Divx/xvid format, you can generally get about twice as much on a DVD while maintaining roughly the same quality, but, of course, you'll need a DivX-capable DVD player to watch it, and you'll lose all the niceties of DVD like chapters and subtitles. Remember, though, that you cannot get better quality than your originals. So, the not-so-easy answer is that you can mess around with Nero and see what 4000 kbps or 2000 kbps settings (use "Custom" under Video Options and DO NOT use LPCM audio) and see if that's to your liking or not.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

or you can use ConvertXtoDVd by VSO:
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

Your computer and the amount of ram you have will determine the speed you get from DVD programs like Nero. I have no idea what you have and why it's taking 4-5 hours to convert AVI files to DVD!

For example, I made a DVD disc last night. It took a little over 5 hours and 30 minutes. I was able to put 6 movies on there that ranged from 100mb to nothing over 300mb. Also, Im not really sure if I my files are .avi, mpeg etc? I would I go about telling? But what I did was take the files open Nero (the latest version before v7) click make my own DVD Movie and just drag the movie files on them. I made my menu, layouts etc..then I started the burn. Now should I have done something before like encode the movie files to something else to make them burn faster or not? I have a sony DRU-710A DL burner, P4 2.0, 1GB ram.

Also, I just got the latest Nero v7 premium edition, is there any cool enough things in that version that I should change from my latest version of 6?

AVI files are very large they do take a lot longer to work with If you are getting the disc made thats a good thing far as speeding up the burn time a different program like Pinnacle 10.5.2 might work faster its setup for that but its still slow with AVI files If you have 1 hour of real time to burn that is 4.7 gigs one disc

Ill try that software and also I was burning at 6x instead of 16x that I have available. Its weird though because if I have a whatever GB .iso I can burn that in 6-8 minutes. Same thing when I encode a AVI into VOB files and burn 6-8 minutes

ISO is a smaller file, copressed if you can covert the files to vts you could use Shrink to convert to ISO to burn more files why are you stuck with AVI files? Also Pinnacle 10.5 is for making home movies 100.00 bucks not cheap

I already have WinAvi so that part is cool.

I know how to convert to AVI to VOB but the shrink part is a little confusing. Are you talking about DVD Shrink or shrinking the files in WinAvi also in the advanced options tab?

DVD Shrink after you open it up under shrink when you click backup you will get a screen to select backup target on the drop down select ISO Image file just below that select target image file that is where it be for you to burn with Nero or Decrypter

@kinglion......why don't you follow this guide, by Alkohol, it's great and maybe it would speed up your computer.... it shouldn't take you 5 hours to convert AVI to DVD! that's rediculous! just follow the guide here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272946

ok...... this is what you do:

1. save your serial #
2. uninstall Nero
3. use the Nero 6 Cleaning tools: http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Clean_Tools.html
4. do a registry clean up, and if you don't have a program to do the job, get one free one here: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
5. defrag the hard drive
6. reboot
7. reinstall Nero 6: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
this is the stable version and I use this version myself!

if you have Nero 7 then use Nero 7 cleaning tools for #3:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html

by doing this you should be able to do a movie in much less time than 5 hours!

Yes this works in that way then you must choose each clip to play one by one if save each clip one by one in a folder Then use Pinnacle you can make a movie with transitons, music in the backgrond, use a mic to talk, make your own titles, music, sound effects and more it will play all the way through like a real movie you don't have to choose each clip one by one

rbrok...... that's incorrect....... here is the guide for AVI to DVD by Alkohol and it converts AVI's to DVD Compliant files with are VTS & VOBs! check out this guide!

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272946

and that's it!

@RBrok.... I know you're a Pinnicle fan..... but there are plenty of members here that use other programs...... I don't use one... I have a folder that has many:

I also have Nero 6.6.0.18 that does a great job!

Ok, so Im sticking to my version of Nero and I did just read the tutorial by alkohol.(AVI to DVD using NeroVision) So his movies took him about 2 hours to do. I just made a LiL Jon DVD that was 698mb in size and I put a menus and a background song and the estimated time was around 2 hours, maybe alittle over. I hadnt read that tutorial at first that said that dont burn directly to disc but to HD first but..also but I still dont understand why it takes over 5 hours to burn a couple of AVI files with a menu. I could easily do it faster without menus etc and encode with WinAvi but I wanted menus and the whole custom build

I've been computing since 1970 and I had pinnacle before....and you're the only one in Afterdawn that is blowing the Pinnacle horn! Hey, it's ok. It works for you. I'm not knocking you.... I'm just saying that these programs I have ....... is enough to do anything I ever want to do with DVDs and video files and more. I don't need anything more. But, don't let that stop you from using what works for you. You know something....... why don't you do a guide! that's a great idea..... so instead of saying use Pinnacle you can say.... here's a guide that shows you how to take an AVI and do what you want to do with it and burn to disk! This way you have more clout than just saying USE PINNACLE.
