PS2 No Data error

No Data error so I pulled the cover and cleaned the laser lens. Still No Data error so I reopened and powered up and watched the laser/disk system. When the disk tray closes the laser bobs, flashes and the spindle spins about two times. What does not happen is the servo (stepper?) motor does not activate the screw drive to move the laser into position. I moved the Laser to mid-stroke on the screw drive with the power off, turn the power on, cycled the disk tray and the laser head did not move. All the other things that are supposed to happen, laser bob, flash and spindle spin happened but the laser remained out in the middle of the stroke of the screw drive. Anyone have experence with this? Sounds like a fuse on the servo motor but I can't seem to locate a fuse for that function. Is the motor bad? Any easy way to check it? Should I just install a new laser?

Help please, my son is a PS2 junkie, it is summer vacation from school with nothing to do and his is driving us all crazy!!!

there is a trigger that the lens presses when it gets too close to the spindle try pressing it while the thing is on see if the lens is moving
but don't press it for long

sometimes that tube the motor rotates is stuck try messing with it
