Can I connect two PS2's together using the network adapters and a Ethernet cable without having to put a router in between them. I am going to do this assuming I have 2 PS2's, 2 Network Adapters, 1 Ethernet cable, 1 game disk and the game saved on to a hard drive installed on the other hard drive. Can anyone give me an answer or some advice?

Whats the purpose for connecting them? Playng against each other? First off the game has to support LAN play. The only game I can think of right now that does this is GT4 (I know there are more, just cant remember any) Second, if the game does support LAN play, my guess is that you would need a x-over cable to do this.

if you're gonna play the game off the hdd of one ps2 then it probably won't work because from what I've learned, hdloader/hdadvance disable your network adapter because of the drivers they load. x-over cable is a crossover cable which is wired differently than other RJ45 ethernet cables and it's required for when you connect 2 devices directly with each other.
