Ok, so here i am sitting down with my old v12, and a new v14, thinking if i should keep the old one or use the new one. I would like to know which version you think is better the v12 or v14, and why?
And one more thing, the slimline has two different lasers, one is a PVR-802, and the other is a SPU-3170, is one better at reading and life than the other?

Im not 100% sure, but I think Sony fixed the burnt out laser issue with the v14.

Yes the v13 or v14 do not require a laser fix but the v12 does.
However, if you're interested in possibly installing an ide hard drive onto the bock of it in the future then it HAS to be the v12 as the solder points required are removed from the v14, if you have no intention whatsoever then go with the 14, much more stable laser (although I never had a problem with mine inparticular).

I dont think i have a problem with my v12, it has a laser fix installed just for safety, but im not using a modchip with it.
And what about the different lasers, anything different about those?

the V14 is newer and has the laser fixed, so that is a plus.
But as above it can not do an internal hard drive, that is bad
the rest is pretty much the same. I also beleive the V14 can not have a set of "tools" for using swap magic installed without voiding the warranty where as the V12 can.

The V12 i have has a modchip and laser fix. I have had it for over a year now and have never had a problem. Recently had a new case put on and an internal hard drive added.

Yea, ive had my v12 since it came out, and havnt had any problems with it, apart from it hooking up 2 or 3 times while playing. I think that i will stick with my v12, does the v14 support an external usb hard drive?

Yes but USB hard drives suck, regardless of version.
You are much better off going through IDE or even backups for that matter.
As Steimy said it is possible to install a set of magic keys (which make the current case act as a fliptop) on a v12 without voiding the warranty as the warranty seal is on the back next to all the connections.
With a v14 Sony got wise and moved the warranty seal to beneath the console over the area that you need to be able to flip up to get in thus, leaving it impossible to keep that warranty.

I'd go with the v12 cause as you have said it already has a laser fix which makes that a big plus and in the future you have an option for the hard drive.
