Awhile ago I formated my 40 GB Seagate to PS2 drive format using WinHIIP. At that time the drive was internal, and now I have it in a USB enclosure. I want the drive back to normal FAT Windows XP format, but Win HIIP does not detect the drive, and neither does my PC. Please help.

Make sure you have the jumpers set correctly. If you're trying to get it detected while in the usb enclosure, you can try installing in your pc and see if it gets detected.

Now the drive is detected by Win HIIP but it says "cannot read from the hard drive" and under the drop box it says Drive 1 Unknown Size

how should the jumpers be set? I dont have any on it now.

Now that it's detected the drive means that your jumpers are fine. Even though the drive doesn't show up windows knows it's there just go to disk manager under computer manager in admin tools (control panel) and you'll be able to format it from there

Dont know what kind of usb encloser you have. But I had this problem before. Is was hooking it up in proper order. I was pluging in usb first then power cord. Learned to plug power in first. Let hard drive spin up give it 10 seconds or so. Then plug in usb cord. Dont know if yours is this way but that solved my problem.

I just re-read angain. If you have no jumper plug at all on the seagate I think that means it is set as slave. I used the jumper on the cable select plug. That might be giving you the problem too.

if u put it in ur pc, look at the screen when ur pc boots (before windows loads), it should show up there as a slave. If it doesnt show up there sounds like its messed up.

If the HDD is in working order, it would show at boot but would not come up in windows as windows doesnt recognise the file system.

True but windows will still be able to detect that the drive itself is connected and you can format it that way.
Go to the drive that win is on and click on properties then click the hardware tab it should be there. If not then it prob really is fried.
