I just picked up a PS2 at a garage sale for dirt cheap. I got 3 games with it and they work in the unit about 50% of the time. sometimes, the "browser" screen sits @ "Reading Disc...." for a minute or two, then says "DISC ERROR". Now, I know that the discs are very clean and free of scratches. So does this tell me it's the unit? The lens is also completely free of dust and scratches.

Here is the info from the version screen:

Console: SCPH-30001 R
Browser: 1.20
CD Player: 1.20
Playstation Driver: 1.10
DVD Player: 2.10U

Hope that helps. Is there a way to breathe new life into this machine via firmware or hardware and get it to read discs properly?

Thanks!

I'm assuming you opened the unit? If it takes that long to DRE, the laser may just need cleaning. I have a V1 (same specs as you) and a V9. the V1 will sometimes sit for about 2-3 minutes saying reading disc, then DRE. I throw in a lens cleaner and it works fine again for a few weeks, then it happens again. My V9 (damn V9 syndrome) will DRE almost immediately, so I know the laser or LA chip (or both) are toast. Since you already opened it up, pop the cover off again and clean the laser with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. It may just fix your DRE (disc read error). Good luck. Oh...you cant update the firmware for a PS2.

Let us know the outcome.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I cleaned the lens (not with a disc, but with a photo lens air-brush, and it's reading all the discs fine(for now) 'Think I'll invest in a lens cleaner, and just go from there :)

Thanks!
