I like to download old movies using various Bit Torrent clients. Usually these films are about 700 Megs and they come down as *.avi files. My current system is as follows:
#1 I use Nero to encode the *.avi file to the Video_TS files that I can burn to a DVD disc that will play in my front room DVD player.
#2 After I have saved 5 or 6 *.avi's I burn them all on a Data DVD disc in case I ever need to prepare another playable disc.
Let me point out that this system works fine about 80-90% of the time, but I do have some problems which I hope some one can help me with.
Problems
#1 Nero takes about 1.5 hours to encode 700 megs and often takes up 100% of my CPU usage as shown by the XP Task Manager. This brings my Athlon 3000 (1.5 gigs DRAM) to a near standstill for 1.5 hours for each film.
Querry:
Can some one suggest a Program that either uses less resouces so I can work with other things while the *.avi file is being encoded or........gets the job done faster than 1.5 hours............or maybe even both???
#2 About 80% of the time the data dics work exactly as they are meant to work, as a Back Up reserve, but sometimes when I stick the data disc back in, my Pioneer simple doesn't see that I have burned these 5 or 6 avi's or it tells me they are corrupted. Occasionally when it starts copying a file back to my hard drive it firstly says it will take 7 minutes to complete the transfer and progressively marches this estimate up to 150 minutes before it finally gives up altogether.
Querry
Can someone suggest a different format or at least a more reliable method of backing up these files?

1. - how's your school going? just a joke.
free prog. "avi2dvd" in software tab, uses less rescources and time, but rule of thumb is to not mess withit while performing dvd functions. if you cant find it there, google it, a wide variety of sites carry it.
2. - version of Nero, possible upgrade
3. - drive/burner, firmware version? possible update
4. - hard drive, capacity?
post back with AT LEAST this info to further assist, if you have logs of burns, those can be helpful too, or use Nero info tool and post data from report

I love VSO's ConvertXToDVD..... why use an older version? the new version is better and faster! And does more than the old DivXtoDVD.

There is a better way. Either BUY the movies on a DVD or get a DVD player that plays DivX.

It is so cheap to get a DVD player with DivX/Xvid compatiblity.
I have got 2 Phillipes that are DivX/Xvid complient for $50 each. I bought a magnovox the other day for my bedroom at walmart for $38. It has played every DVD and XviD that I have tried in it. It says it is only compatible with DVD-R media but I have tried DVD+R media in it and they play as well.
So as stated before the simplest way is to BUY a DVD Player that is DivX/Xvid compatible and burn the AVI files as data disc and watch whenevr you want.

ok...... so now you have a new player that plays DivX... you sent cheap money on that player 38.00-50.00 ....... but does Grandma have one? Does other family memebers have one? ohhhhhhh but they want to borrow that new movie that you recorded! But, alas, it's a DivX recording and now you tell them to go out and buy a new DVD player to play it! And you know Grandma...... she's got a button phobia....she doesn't even know how to get the movie in her player let alone change the satalite channels on the TV!

Getting an XviD player was just a suggestion on him not having to convert everything to a DVD. He asked if there was an easier way and that way would be easier for him to bebale to play the DivX/Xvid files on a standalone DVD Player without converting.
I actully do let family members borrow my movies and if I have 1 that is an AVI file then they just wont watch it. After a while my siblings went out and bought 1 of those DivX/Xvid players so they could borrow the movies I download in AVI form.
As to grandma learning to use the DVD Player with Xvid/DivX. 1 DVD player is pretty much the same as another. You need to put the disc in for it to play. So what would the diffrence be? I dont see the logic in that.
Anyway if your a good grandson/granddaughter then you would invite your grandma over and cook dinner and have a movie for her.

Or you can do what I did man. Go buy a old pentium 3. I found a pentium 3 933 with a gateway mobo. Put 512 of ram in a it. A 9800 proa ati all in wonder and a decent sound audigy card. So I paid 5 for the pentium 3, 20.00 for the audigy, and 60 for the ati card. So now I have a half way decent media center pc in my bedroom. I already had a brand new 120 gig ide drive I picked up on black friday at best buy for 30.00. So now all I need is a wireless g card and Im good.
So all in all, I got about a 100 invested and got a full fledged movie and dvd player, stereo, and internet browser. Plus a lite pop cap game player for a 100.00 How can ya beet that it?
Plus drag my 5.1 logitech speakers in my bedroom from my good comp and I got full theatre sound. So there is more that one way to skin a cat.
Btw...I got the pentium 3, mobo, and custom case at a local flea market for 5.00. The rest I got from Ebay. So check it out...you never know. Im actually thinking of trying a adapter and the tulatin core in this old mobo. Then I can bump it up to 1.23. Can be found for 20.00 on Ebay!

there's ways of doing everything.... just get comfortable with what you want to do and how to do it.
As far as Grandma goes... she wants to do everything herself..... I have to write things down and have diagrams to show her what button to push just to open the dvd tray!!!! then moments later she forgets what button she pushed and has to read the diagrams I made for her..... she even forgets where she puts those diagrams..... then she gets upset that the tv and dvd player and satalite reciever is too hard for her to understand when I have everything down in writing and diagrams for her, on what she wants to do: from changing the channel to insert and watching DVDs! I can't do more than that ..... except to live in her room with her and do what she wants!!!! That's not acceptable by me or her!

Thank you very much for all the help. I was totally unaware of DivX. I downloaded the DivX bundle and immediately burned an *.avi film on to a DVD disc that was playable on my front room DVD player, and all within about 10 minutes. This is great.
Does any one know if it's possible to somehow burn 3 or 4 episodes of a TV series using this system?

What system are you using?
If your DVD player is DivX/Xvid compatible then all you have to do is make a data DVD and import all the AVI files that you want on the DVD in and burn.
