Guys, I've already posted here today about using Full Disc mode to backup a commercial disc containing a feature plus extras, only some of which I require (the film MY DARLING CLEMENTINE plus a documentary about it). (I was told I could insert still images in place of the parts I didn't want.)

But I thought I'd try the Re-author mode. Trouble is, being a bit of a 'DVD Shrink' novice, I may have overlooked something.

I dragged and dropped the two Titles I needed (viz., the movie, 1hr39m in length, plus the doco, of about 40m - no compression problem) from the right of the 'DVD Shrink' screen to the left. Then I clicked on 'Backup!'

A fresh screen headed 'Backup DVD' opened, with several tabs. The first tabbed card showed 'Select backup target', and my E: drive (where MY DARLING CLEMENTINE was inserted) was listed there. Beneath that was 'Select folder for temporary file' and a Temp folder on my Desktop was specified.

Then I clicked 'OK', and currently the encoding seems to be going well. I imagine that when the actual burning is ready to begin, I'll be prompted to insert a blank disc in the E: drive.

But what a pity that there is no space between the two items I've chosen to backup. Could I have done something to put a space between them?

Thanks - Ken41

Not specifically something that I think Shrink can do. The would be adding chapters and projects to 1 disc when shrink takes a bunch of projects and chapters and turns it to 1
GUide to setting frames with Shrink

You could fool yourself and shrink possibly and edit in black screen between the two titles. The last title of the movie that has credits on it probably has black screen somewhere, start and stop frames to where thats all you see. That should work, even if it is only a few seconds. Or if you have any other software like Nero you could always create a movie with that.

Thanks, 'Deadrum33'. My disc-making today was successful (MY DARLING CLEMENTINE + doco) though without the space between its two items that I asked about above.

It now occurs to me: could I have specifically dragged across the original disc's menu and copied that too? That is, would the original disc's menu have continued to function on the new disc for just the two main items (feature + doco) that I had chosen to copy across?

I'm still getting the hang of 'DVD Shrink'! To tell you the truth, I don't quite grasp the instructions for "Setting Start & End frames in DVD Shrink" to which you referred me (or at least I don't quite grasp the idea behind those instructions). Why would one want to start and end a film other than at its own start and end?! To make an excerpt, I guess?

Thanks - Ken41

P.S. In my lounge room I have a stand-alone DVD-recorder attached to a stand-alone DVD-player. I may re-copy the disc I made today and take the opportunity that way to insert a space between the two items. The loss of image-quality should be negligible.

P.S., 'Deadrum33'. I do have a version (6.x) of Nero that someone gave me just before my recent computer problems. I have hardly used it so far. Could it have done the job today and put space between the two items (and ideally have provided a menu for them)? Basically I'm very happy with 'DVD Shrink'.

Hi,
Adding a small pause between the two titles...

First bear in mind that the "space" you are referring to is actually video. It is commonly called black video and is used on almost all videos.
Try previewing a few of the various titles on the DVD. Look for a "black video" title. These are short clips of nothing but black that are used on the original to do what you want to do, adding a pause between scenes. Most DVDs have several. You just have to figure out what the actual title number is.

Start/End feature. Suppose you had a video and wanted to cut out parts. A good example would be to remove scenes you did not want your kids to watch. Another example would be to remove a video clip from a DVD. You could take a clip of some black video, maybe from the ending credits or wherever and then save that. Now you could use it whenever you needed it. This is what this feature can do.
By moving the sliders and clicking the arrows you can select where to make the cuts. The best way to learn this is to simply experiment with it.

Nero VisionExpress should do exactly what you want. Edit, add chapters, create your own menu, also accepts many different file formats. Heres a link to it, similar to the one I posted for Shrink.
