I have a philips 1640p DL dvd burner. I, m using platinum 8 speed DVD+R dual layers. Software: Alcohol 120% and Nero 7 ultra

Im trying to burn an alcohol image. At first it wouldnt burn at all, not with alcohol not with Nero. I updated the firmware of the dvd writer from 2.4 to the latest firmware from the philips site.

It would burn but it would stop at 50%. Both on alcohol and Nero. Nero gave a message saying the burner resetted beginning the 2nd layer.

I'm lost, anyone have an idea?

it could be the media u r using.

Verbatims are the best DL media out there.

I tried imgburn, stopped at 50% when trying to burn 2nd layer.

I/o error

Interpretation: write error

so its pretty much the same as the Nero and alcohol error.

After using media identifier i checked the media i used with the "supported media list" that came with the firmware. Its not on the list. The media I bought is new so it might be a while before its supported....

Verbatim is indeed the best DL media on the market. I would try that until your firmware supports your present DL discs. Even then, I would stick with Verbatim. I've burned hundreds of DL's, and Verbatim has not let me down yet...

It could be your media - use Verbatim only. However, due to the consistency of the failures, most likely your DL capability failed. I had that happen on a new LG. Your drive, most likely, is now permanently a single-layer burner. The laser in your burner needs to burn at higher power to successfully burn the dye on the second layer that at the first. You laser most likely can't achieve that power level any more (or refocus to increase intensity; same effect).

Benq (the real manufacturer of your drive) has a good reputation and this is surprising, but it can happen to any DL drive.

If the media were the problem (although it IS true that Verbatim is the best, so keep that in mind), this problem seems consistent enough not to blame on the media, especially considering your firmware is up-to-date. You might want to try out a firmware from rpc1.org for your drive, and use Verbatim discs, but DL is still expensive I don't want to see you waste any more discs.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Thanx for the replies guys.

As clarification, I used the same type of media everytime: Platinum 8 speed DVD+R DL's (identified as being Ritec S.04).

So it's possible that i have had a faulty burner all this time? I never tried to burn a DL before.

I'll try a verbatim disc to see if that helps. Is there any way to check before buying what type media it is? (like this platinum 8 speed DVD+R DL is a ritec S.04)

Ritek is a mixed bag. I have had good luck with Ritek D01 (sold as Fuji DL). I have had lots of problems with single-layer Ritek, especially Ritek G05 (sold under Memorex and numerous other brand names, as DVD-R 16x). The quality is highly variable and you never know what you're getting with most brands, or even who made the discs. You do with Verbatim and with Taiyo-Yuden.

Try the Verbatim of course; at worst, you may need a new drive, but you'll have good media waiting for it! :) BTW, I just caught this, in case you plan to do lots of DL burning:

Verbatim 20 pack for $34.99 at Best Buy:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7642562&type=produc...
I think they have 3-packs for about $15 if you don't want to spend that kind of money.

Whatever you do, let me know how it turns out.

All DL verbatim media is made by mitsubishi kagaku media (MKM) and is top notch stuff. Ritek DL media is hit and miss. Trust only verbatim for your DL media.
