I've been trying to copy DVD's for the past week and a half but every time it goes to encode (somewhere around 20% or so), the computer shuts down. I've disabled Anti-Virus protection, shut down all unnecessary background programs, I've uninstalled and reinstalled DVDSHRINK, I've installed AnyDVD, I've used DVD Decryptor, I've checked for spyware and viruses, I've made sure that the computer is not overheated. Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps I've missed something. I use a GATEWAY laptop, it's only a 1 1/2 years old.

Try Shrinkto5 or Nero Recode and see if the same thing happens:

http://www.shrinkto5.com/software.asp
http://www.nero.com (free trial)

You may have a driver conflict somewhere.

Other possible solutions.

Go back to an earlier Restore Point when everything worked.

Save your date, reformat your drive, and reinstall the OS and applications.

Edit: added

Is DVD Shrink linked to burn with Nero? If so, uncheck that option on the I/O tab under Edit > Preferences.

wgdepot,
There are really only 2 main reasons a computer turns itself off. One is when there is a serious OS Conflict and the other is heat. You can Google for a free registry cleaner and see if there are any OS Conflicts in the registry. If there are then clean them out.

Laptops are really not the best way to copy a movie as Shrink will use most of your CPU and that will cause heat buildup and then the OS will shut the computer off before there is any damage. Do you have a coolpad to help vent the heat away?

Since you stated this happens during the encoding phase I'll bet it is heat but try both ideas and see if it helps.

Most cases of unanticipated computer shutdowns are due to excessive heat. Laptops are not the best for heat disapation due to compact design and restricted air flows....

This is a long shot, but check your power saving settings. Even though processing is happening there is no "input" from the keyboard or the mouse/touchpad. The machine may be going into hibernate or shutting off automagically after xx mins of "non-use". Some machines are better than others at determining "use".

Laptops are especially prone to this as the default power settings are to maximize battery life, not to offer performance.

I've been fighting that issue for a couple weeks on my spare pc.It also slowed down the process time,so I reformatted.

Registry errors. I get a lot of mini dump errors, blue screens, reboots. Does it during encoding, and sometimes during the burning. I got fed up with it,and spent 2 hrs reformatting her. She is a lean pc,just for burning dvds only. No internet,no spyware,no antivirus. Running perfect now!

Being a laptop, heat would be the leading candidate.I've seen air coolers you can lay your laptop on. Not sure how they perform.
