possibly the percentage of compression involved. less compression, faster encoding. not sure if that is relevant to your situation or not. what software are you using?
I use Shrink; I did think of the compression involved but the slow down just does not seem to correlate with the amount of compression. I just burned Serenity and it's average compression was 54% and it took 2hrs & 20 min to encode. V for Vendetta was compresed aroung 64% and only took 42 minutes.
yeah, the duration of encoding doesn't seem proportional to the relative amounts of compression. i am virtually 100% ignorant about the technology of encoding and compression, however, i think it is possible that it might have something to do with the original material that you are compressing, maybe the bitrate or something. it's POSSIBLE that the originals may have more or less information information that has to be processed by shrink, even at the same compression ratio. i could be completely wrong about that. i hope someone knowledgeable will respond with an answer to explain what you describe. i'd like to know the answer myself!
^^ You hit the nail right on the head. The bitrate has a lot to do with the encoding time. Something like a live music DVD or a super FX movie like Star Wars will probably take a lot longer than a regular ol' 2 hour movie.
With that said, the compression rate, regardless of the original disc's bitrate, has a lot to do with the encoding time too.
PIO really slows down the process--you should change it back to DMA. Defragmenting also helps.

@beforente & Mr Pink - I am unsure what you are saying about bitrate, isn't the encode rates I show 850KB/s & 3200KB/s the bitrates? Are DVD's encoded with a specific bitrate? If this is true why can you read/write at multiples eg. read @ 2.4X.
And a defragment is not my problem I have a fairly new external 300g drive which is only 1/2 full and if my pc was a problem wouldn't all movies encode slowly?
