Hi everybody.

So since I got a flip-top and swap magic around April, I have pretty much played nothing but backups on my PS2 (which is a slimline model for what it's worth.) Around a month ago, I noticed that the loading times for my games were getting worse. Games that used to take a few seconds to load were now taking half a minute, and games with long loading times were becoming pretty unbearable. I also noticed that sound intensive games (sports games w/commentary turned on, dialogue-heavy games) were causing the sound to glitch. The music and speech would play in fragments, and sound effects would happen long after the corresponding action happened. For what it's worth, this applies to backups AND original copies of games, so I don't think that my media is getting burnt out from over-use.

So my question is, does excessive use of backups damage the PS2 laser? For a few months I was playing backups (and only backups) for at least a couple of hours a day - that's not the case anymore, in fact I've hardly touched my PS2 in about a month, but it doesn't seem to have helped before. Is it possible that my laser is just dirty, or am I going to need to seek out a replacement? Any help is much appreciated, cheers in advance.

In short, yes, backups will strain the laser. If you use quality media (read the sticky) you will have less of a problem. If your load times are increasing, it means your laser is getting tired.

Cheers - is there any recommended course of action? I read something about changing the default position of the laser so that it's closer to the disc or something like that?

Three options:

1.Buy a new laser and install it yourself. $50-$70.
2.Buy a new ps2. $129.
3.What i do-Run your games off the Hard drive connected to ps2 to avoid laser strain. hard drive (200GB) $70-$110, network adapter ($15), hd advance $30.

Why the copy's should damage the lens?
Then you shoulden't backup your movies and watch them to your HomeDVD player cos you could damage your lens.
There is no logic to this.
I have a Fat V5 from summer 2001 moded from 1st day ,ended over 100 games + watched many movies and it works perfect.
I just clean it once in a while and,put some grease to the lens rails and thats it.The lens dosen't care if the disc is dark or silver the only thing that matters is if you have burn the disc right so it dosen't need to make many retrys to read it(That can happend with scratched or dirty disc's).
Just insert a genuine DVD and a good made backup DVD and hear the noise,it is the same.
Only CD games can make PS2 beging you to remove it.
The Slim PS2 have lens problems anyway, moded or not and the 1st reason is high temprature and 2nd that is made in china, not in Japan as they should.
