Skinning Halo 2 With Microsoft Paint
By: ll FuZ3 ll
Things you are going to need:
- Softmodded Xbox
- DotHalo v1.0b3.0: http://files.filefront.com/DotHalo+v10b3...;/fileinfo.html
- DXTBmp: http://files.filefront.com/dxtbmpxEXE/;5372377;;/fileinfo.html
Getting Started
First you are going to need to open your Halo 2 map, in which I am using Sanctuary (deltatap), and the DotHalo I have provided you with. If you have the same version you can just use that.

Then you are going to need to locate the [bitm] Bitmap tag.

Then for this tutorial I want to edit the cliffs so scroll down to scenarios\bitmaps\multi\deltatap\deltatap_cliffs

Then click "Extract Bitmap"

Then save it somewhere that you will remember where it is.

You must remember what format it's in.

Then open up DXTBmp.

Then click "File" and then "Open" and then locate the bitmap you just extracted. Then click open.

Then click "Image" and then "Send to Editor"

Then edit the bitmap however you want.

Then click "File" and then "Save"

Then maximize DXTBmp back up. Click "Image" and then "Reload After Edit"

Then click "File" then "Save As" and then "DDS Texture"

Look at the "Save as Type" and make sure it's the right format. If so click "Save"

It says it already exists so click "Yes" to overwrite it.

Then go back to DotHalo and go to the [bitm] Bitmap tag.

Then locate scenarios\bitmaps\multi\deltatap\deltatap_cliffs again. Click "Inject Bitmap"

Then find your edited bitmap and then click "Open"

You will get a message that says that it has been injected. Then click "Ok"

Then you will see your edited bitmap. Then click "Fix Encryption"

Then you can close DotHalo and FTP the map to your Xbox and then you will have to delete the temporary files out of X, Y, and Z drives in order for the skins to show up and then just start up Halo 2 and check out your skin!

@backupguy
Now you have modded your maps, you can't go on matchmaking anymore! Delete the maps, and re-download them from Xbox Live.

ive been banned for over a year mike, way before i did this, i cant use my current maps because they wont load due to non working mods, unfortunately i used the backup maps by mistake.i cant download the maps because im banned from live altogether because i kept using two months. i think i might just get one of those discs with the maps on them.

Looks like a good tutorial, but paint isn't going to get you anywhere with skinning maps. I recommend Photoshop or something similar.

Yeah my computer didn't really run Photoshop so I found out how to do this. But I just learned portable photoshop pretty much works on any computer so I might check up on that.

Yeah, there are a few alternatives. I think macromedia fireworks might work. There is another program like photoshop that might work, but I'm having a brainfart.
Well, good luck :)

I'll be sure to. But is the warthog's bitmap in the bitmap tag? I have never looked because I just started skinning and so far I have only done the scenarios which is pretty much the walls and stuff.

It is possible to skin the warthog.. In bitmaps, find the warthog, extract the image file, open it up, skin it, save it and then re-inject it.
By the way, "FuZ3" you may want to mention how you will have to delete the temporary files out of X, Y, and Z drives in order for the skins to show up.

Thanks for that. But if you have XBMC as your dashboard then you don't have a X, Y, and Z. Well I don't.

hey dude with the modded backups that cant get new ones, just get a multiplayer map pack, thats what i found is the easiest.
