You have your MTU set to high. If you're using PPPOE use 1492 as your MTU. 1500 if you're on a bridged connection. Try searching for the TCP/IP Optimizer program here www.speedguide.net

Damn... i hotbotted "what is mtu", lol:
Quote:
What is MTU ?

A maximum transmission unit (MTU) is the largest size packet or frame, specified in octets (eight-bit bytes), that can be sent in a packet or frame-based network such as the Internet. The Internet´s Transmission Control Protocol uses the MTU to determine the maximum size of each packet in any transmission. Too large an MTU size may mean retransmissions if the packet encounters a router that can´t handle that large a packet. Too small an MTU size means relatively more header overhead and more acknowledgements that have to be sent and handled. Most computer operating systems provide a default MTU value that is suitable for most users. In general, Internet users should follow the advice of their Internet service provider (ISP) about whether to change the default value and what to change it to.

In Windows 95, the default MTU was 1500 octets (eight-bit bytes), partly because this is the Ethernet standard MTU. The Internet de facto standard MTU is 576, but ISPs often suggest using 1500. If you frequently access Web sites that encounter routers with an MTU size of 576, you may want to change to that size. (Apparently some users find that changing the setting to 576 improves performance and others do not find any improvement.) The minimum value that an MTU can be set to is 68.

For more recent Windows systems, the operating system is able to sense whether your connection should use 1500 or 576 and select the appropriate MTU for the connection.

I know...damn...

Anyways...

I found this on another site:
Quote:
Xbox Live connection failure:

When you are booted out of Xbox Live and testing the connection shows an MTU failure, there is nothing wrong with your Xbox 360. You will receive this error message anytime the Xbox Live service is down for maintenance.
I thought it was just stupid, so i kept looking around and i found something useful in the microsoft website (yes, really, something useful in that site)

(http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;840419) Explains that:
Quote:
Your router?s MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) setting must be higher than 1365. If it is not, you cannot connect to Xbox Live.
My experience has told me a lot of times that 1500 is best, though like the first qoute said, some people use the lower ones because they feel its better.

You can usually change this easily by going to your router (usually at 192.168.0.254, though it could be different depending on your router) If you need help with your router, write your router in a reply ill get you instructions.

Sorry for the long post, and i hope i'm of some help !

I thought the routers IP was always 192.168.1.1 or localhost

Its not always that, DLink and MSI brand ones usually (mine does too) use 196-168.1.254 . It depends on the manufacturer.

start>run>"cmd" now type "ipconfig"

get your gateway ip address, and type it in internet explorer. Mine is 192.168.0.1

Now go into your router, find the MTU settin and change it.

I'am having the same problem trying to get on Xbox live with my Xbox360. Im also using a Westell 2200(model#A90-220015-04) and it will not pass the mtu test. I have talked with xbox and verizon representatives about this, and still havent solved the problem. I've tried to change my mtu setting, however I cant find out how to do this. If anyone could help I would be very greatful.

The MTU settings should be somewhere within yopur router. I'm not familiar with yours so I can not tell you where to look. As long as you are logged into your router as admin then just look through every section ( normally the menu is down the left) for something that says MTU.
Sorry I couldnt help more but maybe someone else knows where it is on your router.

its a pretty easy fix... it actually isnt an MTU problem.
first (on your computer) click:
start, control panel, network connections.
next, click on the applicable network/local area connection
now, click the support tab, then details....

this gives you all the information you need to fix the problem.
it lists your physical address.... or MAC address...

now, simply turn on your 360 and go to the "system" blade
next click:
network settings, edit settings, then push the thumb stick to the right to bring up "additional settings".
scroll down and click advanced settings, alternate mac address.
boom... there you go... put in your mac address.

ps, don't worry if your mac address has spaces or dashes... just put the numbers and letters in without them.
now, find me playing halo 2, and get owned!

oh yeah... it has nothing to do with the xbox really. its a flaw in the adsl modem... so, thats what you call a work around. allows the packets to be addressed to the xbox now, instead of being bogged down in the router/modem... i think microsoft should do an update to detect this type of modem and let the xbox get the info automaticlly, but...... the westell brand isnt on their compatibility list.

Ok, so I had this problem this morning and i have alyways used the same connection method without a problem, then this morning I go to connect to xbox live and I get this mtu setting stuff under the network "help" center. Well basically its BS and I will agree with the above person that said when xbox live is down due to repair or upgrades you will get this error as I did this morning. I confirmed it as I went to xbox.com and all of their sites are shutdown due to maintence. So more than likely this is what you are experiencing.

Microsoft is doing some upgrades and xbox live will be unavailable March 27-28 between 5pm and 7am.

So there's nothing to panic about, ignore all posts in this thread as there is no problem with your ISP or your modem.

In fact Live should be back on just over an hour from now (in fact it's precisely 1 hour and 30 seconds from now).

Edit: It will also to be interesting to see wether this new update will be able to detect and ban consoles that have been flashed. Microsoft obviously knows people flash their drives, and I think there's a good chance someone who works from microsoft frequents this forum (and probably other xbox 360 forums too, it would be stupid to think they don't).
