One more thing I just realized... when I try to burn w/ Nero "Copy DVD" (straight DVD to DVD) and I select write speed, the highest option is 2.4x... my burner is 18x and DVDs are 16x why???

the reason for this could be the media and the firmware of your burner,
also i would not recommend burning that way(on-the-Fly), its always better to rip to the HDD then burn, i like using IMGburn for copying my burned disks(should only take around 5 mins to rip and then depending on your burn time 8-13 mins)

Another question i'm confused about which movies need to be encoded and which don't... Is that like the type of movie (ie- LOTR vs Billy Madison)? Is it the age (same examples i guess)

This really depends on a lot of things,
First is the dvd a SL or a DL disk, if its a SL disk no compression is needed. however most dvds are DL disks
also depends on what type of backup you want,
full or main movie only, plus how long the movie is.
when ppl do movie only a lot of them need no or little compression to fit on a SL disk

the 2 examples you said are different becuase of the time issue, LOTR is 2+hours, and billy madison(might be a SL disk) is probably around 1 hour and 30 mins.

hope that wasn't too confusing

From my note, SATA isn't affected by DMA PIO, so the transcoding with Shrink when the files on the HD isn't effected as much as a slowed down optical drive.

You said the drive was burning at 2.4X, what did you set the burn to? I set burn speed each time I use Nero. When using Shrink the speed is set by Shrink. When using an expired copy of the Nero trial a system will burn at the default 2.4X. That isn't likely to be your problem, but I thought I'd mention it for any who might read this later.

Since you're using XP, you can use TaskManager to monitor your RAM usage to see if you're paging.

Almost forgot. You use Shrink or other transcoders to about 20-25% and then switch to encoding (if you have the software) for the heavier compression tasks. It depends mostly on content and compression. I also use my encoder software when I want to insure the best quality, even at lower compression. You can check out DVD Rebuilder for free.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your input... I'm still learning as I go... I've been fiddling with settings (both on my comp. and the software) and I've got the whole process down to about 30 mins. (rip = 20-25mins) (burn = 5-10mins) which is way better than like an hour+ for each... Does anyone prefer DVDshrink or something else over other programs?

i like Nero recode2 because it is faster than shrink
BTW, recode2 is made by the same guy as shrink

You won't find another freeware program that compares to Shrink and most of the retail transcoders are not much better. If I'm doing a quick job for one of my friends and they're in a hurry, I use DVDCopy5 from InterVideo. I usually use files ripped ripped to the HDD because I can check the source on the PC if something goes wrong. AnyDVD can be used if the need for speed is great.

Seems everyone has their favorite. Most programs have a trial. Download some of them and give them a roadtest and see what you like. Most backups I do use RI4M, RB Pro/CCE SP, and Nero Express. Some of my extra utilities are AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter (part of RI4M), and FixVTS (code incorporated in RI4M). I keep Shrink loaded because it's a classic and still a usable program. The utilities in the program are still handy.

Okay, I am having really weird things happen.... My son just rebuilt my computer. He put vista on it. Is this a mistake as far as copying movies goes? Since we started it up and put shrink, AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter on, I haven't been able to copy a disc. I am just wondering if vista has some built in mechinisum that keeps you from copying dvds. It works perfectly until about one third or half way into the movie and then it's just error after error This is dvd decryptor log on scooby doo: which my son had no trouble copying on xp: I 23:54:52 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started!

You hit it on the nose. Vistq has protections built in. You have to be sure all your programs have been updated for Vista. Programs like the old Decypter, Shrink, and others were written before Vista. It's a matter of working with what is compatible and what isn't.
