I am fairly new at backing up my dvds. I have been burning at max speed (which has went up to as far as 14x) for my first 5 backups and they have all played fine so far.

My question is: what would be the recommended write speed? I am just asking to prevent any problems in the future.

It is generally recommended to burn at no more than half the rated speed of the media.

Thats not always true. Ask around in the Benq forum. Sometimes 8 and even 12x is better with good media and a good burner. JMO and several others.

What I'm saying is with the right media and burner you results will be better at 8 and sometimes 12X. Like I said ask in the Benq forum. That all.

No need to inquire to the BenQ forum, burning too slow can be just as bad as burning too fast. If half the rated speed of the blank doesn't provide you with quality results, then play with the speed to get what you are after...Try a higher speed then a lower speed.

I use Verbatim 16X discs (MCC) which I burn at 16X in both my LG4167 and Benq1640. The Nero Transfer Rate tests are excellent and the Disc Quality Tests (both done in the Benq) are 95. Find and use the correct media and you can burn at the rated speeds. If you have to burn at a slower speed you are using the wrong media. One size does not fit all.

That's what I was saying. The old standby rule of 4x max for video burning is gone with better burners and better media.
