I searched and googled, but I'm not finding anything. There's got to be something I'm missing. Sorry.

I have an HD DVD Toshiba player. Can I back up an HD DVD the same as any other? I tried to back up Glory Road (from an HD DVD) CD, but when I open DVD Shrink there is no Title 1. I can't find the main movie, just the previews, etc...

Thanks.

Hi abbygayle
Haven't done any HD DVD's (I'm a newbie there & a little to costly for my pocket:).
Shrink probably won't handle them set to a DVD5 - too much for it's compression algorithms alone. And if it can I'd have to think the quality would be pretty poor.
Plus the copy protection on this one on the 'regular' DVD is Macrovision's Ripguard that Shrink can't handle by itself.

If you wanted to back it up on a HD DVD disc you would need a burner that supports this - few on the market. I think the blanks are like $25 each(?)

Now you might be able to back it up to a DVD9 - heavy compression though - I would think running AnyDVD in the background w/ Nero's Recode or Shrink w/ both set to DVD9 may do it.

Or a free way rip with DVD Fab decrypter (need alot of free hard drive space) and then open the video_ts folder in Shrink or Recode and go from there. Again have both set to DVD9.
Use Verbatim + R DL only for this option and if your drive(s) support booktyping - booktype them to DVD - Rom
Oh and make sure the firmware of the drive burning these is up tp date.
Buying and burnmg an HD DVD might be a little more costlier coaster :)

Keep up posted on what you do - others here may have better suggestions too and I'm sure otheres are curious too on how to do this with what programs are out there now.
Aslo like to find out the playback quality.

:) sounds like it won't be easy anyway! if i get it figured out i'll keep this up to date. appreciate others advice also.
thanks for your help.

also, i don't necessarily care that the backup is hd dvd quality (though it'd be a nice bonus). just a regular backup would be fine, but haven't gotten it to work yet.

Sounds like a good challenge :)

What programs besides Shrink to you have?

Well a reglar backup from a DVD9 to DVD5 is one thing. A dvd backup from a 15 gig to a DVD9 or dvd 5 maybe anohter.

I'm guessing your burner can read these's?
Try DVDFab Decrypter (free) and see if you can rip tbis disc to your hard drive:
