Need help with PS2 (DRE)

I just bought a PS2 (SCPH-30001, pics below) off ebay. It will play my black PS1 CD games (when vertical) and DVD movies, but it won't play the blue backed CD game that it came with (I get a DRE). I don't have any DVD type games to test with right now. I've tried adjusting the white cog wheel thing already but that didn't seem to work. Any suggestions? Thanx

try to clean the laser with a q-tip that has a bit of alcohol on it.

yeah i go ta ps2 v7 and it goes to DRE!! but the thing is it doesn't play anything! dvd's, silver, audios nothing! the disc spins for 10 seconds then it just stops! i dont no what to do ive cleaned the laser eye and rotated the gear that changes the angle of teh laser. isit something to do with the laser? when i open the tray to put in a game it closes almost instantly so only have like 2 seconds to put in a game?! any help?
