I just got a new NEC DVD+-RW drive. My old drive broke, but with it I burned a few video-dvd dvds. I used NeroVision Express. All of my .avi files end up being 4.4gb. A normal dvd holds 4.7gb, so I figure it should be no problem right? Well when I add the files to Nero, they show up as 22.2gb, what the heck? I could do it before, why can't I do it now? I am almost certain it is not the drive's problem.

Hi KingMath
Which version of Nero are you using like 6.6.0.18 or 7.0.8.2?

What is the original size of the avi's that you are trying to add?
How many are there?

There is 13 different .avi files, each are roughly 345mb, give or take a little bit. The total file size is only 4.4gb. But when I put it into Nero (version 6.6.13) it shows up as a whopping 22.2gb. It won't do this for if I try to just put the files on as a data disc. But if I try to make it a dvd-video disc, it will not work. I understand that it needs to create a menu, chapters, and convert the files to dvd-video. But I think it is more than that. Anyone else have this problem or does anyone know how to help? All I want to do is put the files in a dvd so they can be viewed on a standard dvd player.

By the way I am using Nero Vision Express 3 for this task. When I try to make a DVD-video file with the same exact files that are 4.4gb it ends up being 22.2gb on Nero Vision express. (I also got a different DVD-Video buring program - Ulead Movie Factory, that did the same thing as Nero Vision Express). However, if I just try to make a DVD data disc, the files show up as the acually 4.4gb. So I know it is not a hardware issue. It has something to do with DVD-Video.

It's because of the change in format from AVI to mpeg. Now you know why most videos on the net are not in mpeg format.

Yeah but the change in format made them go fro 4.4gb to 22.2gb? I think that sounds like quite a bit...

Okay well I jsut got my hands on a .avi - mpeg4 converter. I converted one .avi file 345mb - one .mp4 225mb. It acually apears to be getting smaller.

@KingMath
The files blow up (uncompress & conversion) from the original size. Ex. a 700 mb AVI after using Nero is roughly 3.6 gig.
A single layer DVD (4.7 gig) actually only holds 4.38.
So you'll only be able to put a few on each disc.

Or get a new standalone that plays DivX format and then you can get them all on one disk and play them.
