I have CloneDVD and Recode, but I want to use the one that will give me the "Best" quality of the movie I am backing up.

-I am using Verbatim 16x DVD-R Discs.
-On CloneDVD I have the option to burn using 1x through 16x.
-On Nero Recode I have the option to burn using 6x through 16x.

If the quality of my backup will be 80% with both programs, which program should I burn it with, and what speed should I use?

Thanks A Lot.

Personally, I would use DVD Shrink, but that's just me. Using DVD Shrink's deep analysis feature, you'll get a great looking backup.
If I had to choose between Clone or Recode, I would personally go with Recode. Clone may be easy to use, but the overall quality isn't that great, IMHO.

I agree w/ DakotaFan. Recode is better quality wise w/ compression.

If you have a good drive - I would burn those verbs at 8x.
Make sure the firmware on the drive is up to date too.

Nero Recode 2 hands down. It's faster and the quality is much better. If you're the few that owned any 45' - 55' HDTV, then I highly recommend using "Assign Best Quality to Main Movie + Advanced Analysis + HQSR = High Quality Slow Recording" via Nero Recode.

I have used CloneDVD2 for most of my backups lately and i notice some of the compression on my 34" WS Sony, but the advanced analysis in shrink or recode really help things out alot and give better output in my opinion. I am starting to use recode more now that i am noticing a difference. Also recode will let you adjust the compression for the main movie and lower it for the extras. Clone has the advantage of keeping the menus while removing video streams. Recode or shrink can do that in re-author mode, but it looses the menus. The menus in a movie contain the chapter selections, which come in handy if you want to jump to one part of the movie.
I also like to watch the movie stream while being ripped, and clone only gives snapshots.
Ok, so i spend too much time in front of the computer monitor.

Recode definitely if you have Nero, if you do not then Shrink. Recode is the tweaked version of Shrink so you can't lose with using either one. Clone is last on my list, only used for movies with little compression. I have done TV series disks, full backup using Shrink and then Clone. Clone gives artifacts in the pic, Shrink using deep analysis and AEC Quality Enhancements does much better. My .02 cents :)

If you have Recode use that with Advanced Analysis and Slow Encode, it will come out great. All my Sopranos have come out perfect using either Shrink or Recode. I prefer Recode because it is faster.

Recode is easy peasy.....remake a dvd and import main movie, remove audio and subtitles the same as DVD Shrink and backup.

You may be better off using Shrink and substituting stills for the junk and then removing the audio, so you can keep your menu. If you use Remake in Recode you lose the menu the same as reauthor in Shrink. I did full backups because I wanted to keep my menu functional. You can rip Movie+Menu only in RipIt4Me, but I have not tried this with a series disk. I know the feature works though as I have done a couple of movies this way and both movie and menu are there, the junk is just gone.

I am going to have to try that Menu+Movie feature in Ripit4me. Clone is fast and easy, but i think it only does one pass at the encode, and recode/shrink lets you select 2pass which really helps. I noticed artifacts too on my clone copies and that is really annoying. I never noticed it before on my shrink copies (i always use 2 pass unless it doesnt need compression). The extra features in a movie are not important to me, but keeping the menu is. Movie only is a good way to go when you want the least compression on the movie, as some of those menus gobble up a lot of space sometimes.
Quality over speed, and you cant go wrong. Recode is pretty fast. When i really want the whole disc, and time is not a factor, i use DVD Rebuilder with CCE encoder and get an excellent copy. The quality difference between Encdoing and Transcoding is apparent.

I prefer recode myself, especially when I found out I can go into the registry and change quality settings (Max smooth, smooth, sharp, max sharp) like Shrink.
Somewhat related question, how well does a movie+menu only work?
I'd think with menu features pointing at a destination on the disc that is non-existent, troubles could arise. Am I thinking about this too much?

Sorry, didn't realize we were talking about full movie. I need to read these posts more carefully.

I have used Clone just Movie and Menu and never had an problems, I did the ones with RipIt4Me and the menu works but only for the movie and to choose scenes otherwise it can't pick anything that is not there and will just sit there on the screen.

thanks for the info, the reason I ask is because when I was first learning about movie editing/encoding/video file structures, I somehow put together a disc in which the main movie worked but if I hit the menu for anything else it caused my computer and set top DVD player to basically crash or need a hard restart/ unplugging. I'm glad I'm past that stage now, but happy to still be learning and blamed that problem on Memorex discs :P
