How to fix errored rmvb file ?

I have a few rmvb files which hangs when playing with real player or Media Player Classic. Sometime it stuck on a screen. Sometime it stuck on the same screen but the audio continue on. When I tried to convert the file to AVI or mpeg, using winavi or SUPER, the conversion terminates with an error. Some files will seem to convert complete. But when you play the mpeg or AVI output file, you will get to a screen of garbbage with or without audio.Normal this garbage screen will go until the end of the video.
I have tried a program called "Rm Rmvb Fix Joiner". but I found it useless.
What I am doing now is to use the slider on the real player to skip over the error. This depends on how precise I click the mouse, I can skip over seconds to minutes of video.

Any suggestion on what is the best way to fix this kind of problem ? (i.e skip over the part that can not play automatically with minmum lost of information) either during playback or conversion.
