I am going to purchase this drive as it will work out to $149 CDN and that is cheap. What media should I buy for this drive and where is the cheapest place to get it, thanks!

I have this exact same drive. Where are you getting it for $149 can. I am sure plenty of people want to know that. The best deal on media in the country for that burner is canada computers. www.canadacomputers.com Prino 1times -r work excellent with this drive, but stay away from the -rw's! You have been warned!

This is a 2x drive is it not? How long does it take for this burner to burn a full DVD-R at 1x? The drive is regularly $279.99 @ Best Buy, it is on sale for $229.99 + a $80 mail-in rebate which drops the price to $149.99 + tax.
Well even if the internet goes down, I can still count on the spam to reach my email box.

The Princo 1X discs burn at 2X speed on my LG drive.
1X burn will take about 1 hour
2X burn will take about 30 minutes

I am just telling you what I burn with because I am a cheap ass. It does burn -r at 2times I believe, but with dvd-xcopy express, I get rips that take 45mins with a 1times princo disc

I have done research on DVD burning by reading the help docs on this site. Let me get a few facts straight:
- DVD-5 DVDs can burn directly to a DVD-r
- DVD-9 DVDs are too big therefore you have to remove extra features, etc. (A lot of DVD's are DVD-9)
- It is better to make an IMG on the HD rather than going DVD-to-DVD
Just trying to get my facts straight before buying this drive. Sorry to be a pain in the a**

Not always can a DVD-5 be burned straight to dvd-r. Sometimes it is necessary to use dvdxcopy or dvdxcopy xpress. Both of these are extremely useful tools. You most often lose menus and special features if you want to fit it on one disc. If you dont mind 2, than use dvdxcopy. If you want 1 with just the main movie, use dvdxcopy xpress. There are several sites you can get trial copies of dvdxcopy. There is also a long way around with SmartRipper and ifo edit which is free, but it is moderately tricky.

With some DVD Movies, once the disc has been ripped, it can be burnt on to a DVD-R without any further action needed. However, you will find as you endeavour to make more and more back-ups, that a compression tool is needed as the DVD's you are trying to back up are larger than the maximum capacity of the DVD-R. This is because different types of discs have differing layers and sides!
These are the types of discs that are currently used:
DVD-5 ? A DVD disc which has data on one side, and a single layer of information which holds 4.7 GB of data
DVD-9 ? A DVD disc holding data on one side, but with two layers of information. A DVD-9 holds 8.5 GB of data over the two layers.
DVD-10 ? A DVD disc holding data on both sides of the disc, but only using single layers. This is effectively a double sided DVD-5, and therefore holds 8.5 GB of
DVD-18 ? The most modern iteration of DVD video disc, with two sides each utilising dual layers. This raises the data capacity to 17 GB, and has been used on recent discs such as the single-disc version of Terminator 2: The Ultimate Edition.

wait a sec, correct me if I'm wrong, but dvdxcopy xpress's most recent upgrade will allow the complete copying of any dvd disc. Isn't that right? 3.0 . You will lose some quality but unless you have a hd tv or anything over 37 inch, you won't even notice.
It is worth it though. If we have to tell you why it is worth it maybe you shouldnt buy one afterall.

I paid $300 CAD for this burner and it has been worth it. Using the method in mine or Oriphus' signature, you can often strip off the extra stuff you don't need to make the movie fit. (like director's commentary, french sound, deleted scenes, etc.)
The movies that don't fit can be compressed. Most movies under 2 hours can be compressed without any noticable artifacts, as long as you do it right, have a speedy computer, and don't do ANYTHING else while compressing.

Actually, even with 20% compression, i dont really notice it too much on my 90" projected image with my projector.

The only problem you will find w/ DVDXCopy or DVDxCopy Express is on backinup episode tv series.
Im working overnight on this matter, since I´m new to the business and dont know exactly how to do it.
The guides Oriphus provide are useful, but for all my research, there is no straightforward method and to do the hard way you have to go trying.
Just have the PowerDVD thing installed, since it allows U to test the material prior to burning.
Also, my opinion on the speed matter is that the fastest you burn the higher are the chances to get an unusable disc.
Finnaly, thanks once more for you all, and if someone has a direct guide on how to backup Sopranos or Sex and The City please tell me!
