I don't suppose there is a way to do this without wiping my HDD clean, is there?

It's quite simple, really. OK do this. Right click on My computer then Properties, then click on the Advanced tab, there You have three options: Performance, User Profiles and Startup and Recovery, you see the third option Startuo and.. click on Settings, when in settings click on Edit button, it should open up a boot.ini file in Notepad, locate the line where it says:
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin

U see here is just one windows ready for booting the WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional", and u will have this and microsoft windows line, now delete the whole line saying multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows" /noexecute=optin

save and exit and the screen is gone.

This is what I see, so what do I delete. It's a little different than what you suggested.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /usepmtimer
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Delete the C:\="Microsoft Windows" line. Save the file and reboot. The screen should be gone.
