I went to western digital and used one of their diagnostic tools, to clean my hard drive. Now it suppossed to be like new. I insert my windows xp installation cd and the computer doensn't recognize it. It totally bypasses it. Before I cleaned my hard drive, I put the cd in, and in my computer it recognized it as the windows xp installation disk.

The computer checks the floppy disk first for the boot record, next it checks the cd rom. My cd rom drive doesn't work and it isn't even connected to the ide ports. However, my dvd rom drive is connected, and after the floppy drive, it checked the dvd rom drive, I'm assuming. But the cd rom installation windows xp is not booting.

Should I install bootable windows xp setup disks on floppy instead.I can download those from the microsoft website.

heres what i would check. first if you didnt change the options in your bios to make the computer check the dvd drive it might not.so i would change that option. You can not install off of bootable windows cd's like the name says you can only boot from them. so they wouldnt really serve you any purpose.

well I'm hitting the key to make it go into advanced options, and I can select dvd, but it won't go there. I've done it several times over, and it keeps going to the "no boot options".

Hi there, if you are having problems recognising and booting from the cd/dvd rom drive try the floppy boot disk for xp. its a bit longer winded way round but it will start up your pc and should recognise your drive allowing you to re-install xp. you can get the setup utility from M$ themselves, this tool which will will create a six disk set, make sure you have 6 spare floppy disk all formatted and ready before you run the setup utilility tool and make sure you get the right version of the tool too --> Link to Microsoft download point --> http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

Hope this helps

I guess I had a different idea of a windows bootable floopy. So if ic understand. This program makes a virtual copy of windows and puts it on 6 floppies? And with this you can? boot? install?
