I am trying to rip backup copies and am getting errors on several older movies using decrypter.

I get an I/O Error message.

ScsiStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition

CDB: 28 00 00 1D E3 40 00 00 01 00
Interpretation: Read (10) - Sector: 1958720

Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A00 00 .....
Interpretation: L-EC Uncorrectable Error

Any thoughts on what is causing this error would be appreciated.

I have checked the discs and they do not have scratches, smudges, smears or anything like that. It has happened with backup copies of 2 different older movies.

hamillp ,
What that message is telling you is there is a problem w/ the read at Sector: 1958720 . You might tell DVDD to ignore read errors or try DVDFAB Decrypter and see if it will read through the error also. This error could be a bad mastering press or a small bubble(when they fused the 2 layers together).

Thanks for the help. If I tell it to ignore read errors will that have an impact on the final dvd. will there be a skipped section?

I am trying to rip it with DVD Fab right now and it looks like it is getting hung up as well.

hamillp,
If you have tried 2 ripper then the sector is bad. How big of an error the sector is will determine if it causes you problems in viewing. You might try using DVDD in ISO Mode to read the DVD and then use Shrink to compress the iso.

I was actually using DVDD in ISO mode to rip it. Is there anyway that labels could cause this problem? I have recently tried to backup 3 different backups and have run into problems using DVDD.

Adhesive labels aren't recommended for this very reason.

Yeah, I stopped using labels when I read about the problems they cause. Unfortunately many of the backups have those labels on them. Back to the drawing board on this one. Thanks for all the help though.

One more question. Does it make any sense that I can play these movies in a standalone player but cannot rip them?

Yep....The way a standalone DVD player reads the disc is more tolerant of defect than that of a DVD-ROM in a PC.

hamillp,
Plus the disk is not spinning that fast when it is playing. Speed it up and if the label is off center and you are nopw asking for trouble

Any suggestions on how to remove the labels or is the damage already done and removing the labels would not really do any good??

Removing the label might help, but probably not much...soap and water and maybe a little "goof off".

Last question. I put one of the discs in a different computer and was able to rip it with DVD Decrypter. Does that make sense? Is that DVD-ROM just not as sensitive or something?

hi :)
did a little experiment a while ago on a disc of mine (burned in the early days before i found AD )
with the label on the PIF was out of this world, the moment i removed the label the PIF was within an acceptable level.
well worth a try, make sure all the glue is removed

That makes perfect sense...some drives are just better readers than others, just like some drives are better at burning.

Thanks for all your help. Perhaps I will go ahead and try to remove the labels and see if that helps. It is odd though that it worked in a different computer.

hamillp,
It is like LOCOENG stated some are better than others. Try cleaning your laser on the Rom and see if that helps

hi :)
the moving from one room/house to another could be why it played, because of the change of temp/humidity
The trouble with paper labels on DVDs is that the paper contracts and expands with humidity and causes the disc to dish ever so slightly. This causes tilt problems that a 650 nanometer laser cannot resolve. The 780 nanometer infrared CD laser has less of a problem, and the solid plastic piece used in CD-Rs is less likely to dish anyway.
