Some of these cheap dvd blanks are garbage-It is such a waste and hard on the enviroment to constantly throw away these plastic disks-they take a thousand years to decompose-and that is all some are good for--as compost-don't be ripped off-some like Imation or Memorex will have 7 out of 10 bad disks in the bundle-I use Sony and Maxell DVD AND CD-RW--both + and -I used to blame the burner-wrong-cheap/bad media was the culprit-spend a little more-it's worth it-

Glad you've learned your lesson. Keep on spreading the words to other newbies now, teach and learned.

My best choices of media are: Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (Made In Japan by Hitachi Corp.), these are ranked as 1st class media. You can't go wrong with any of them, I've been using over a thousand from them and I've never experienced any playback issues whatsoever.

Good luck to all and happy burning.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

@ octapalos,

U can get the Taiyo Yudens only online, supermediastore.com, rima.com, meritline.com

The verbatims u should be able to get from best buy, and these are the only good ones that are made in taiwan

but if u see a Made in Japan with a different brand name they are usually made by taiyo yuden

I heard that about Sony outsourcing the junk--They also have a recall right now of all lithium batteries used in laptops--Sony is recalling all of them due to a fire hazard-They get too hot and have caused fires-Laptops actually catching fire -One guy had his catch fire in his truck; while he was in the house-The fire caught the seats and then the fuel tanks-It burned to the ground-When did Sony start putting their name on inferior products-They have always been known for quality-sad-who's next?-Honda-

Hi all,

I would like to back up my absolute favorite movies, and am thus especially concerned about the quality of media that I use.

Could you folks please identify which specific brand -- and specific type of media that you are most loyal to, and where in particular you purchase the merchandise from? Note: I would certainly be more comfortable with buying from a "reputable" store (bbb and/or bizrate affiliation, or something akin....or from a well known brick-and-mortar)?

On a similar note, is the packaging for media made in Japan at least generally identified as such, and therefore, if I see such identified media from any brand-name, is it then a given that it will be a quality product? Or are there any known sub-standard media producers in Japan?

Thanks,

Dave

That's weird, i've been using GQ thinking it's a cheap brand, but i don't much problems with it, i buy them in 50pack and probably get 1-2 bad discs. Other than that they're fine.

I think the list has already been identified by alkohol and verified by everyone else in the thread. As for availability, Verbatims are probably the most widely available if'n you live in the states and are usually on sale at Best Buy.

I thought that I read in this forum a while back that some of the Verbatim media was junk, and that some of it (presumably what was coming from Japan) was high quality. Do I have this brand confused with another one?

You have it confused with Sony or Fuji. Verbatims are good if made in Japan, Singapore or Taiwan.

I haven't had any problems with Memorix ? Other people here have ? I usually buy either Memorix or Maxells at Best Buy. Which ever is in a spindle of 100 for $28 - $30 (DVD-R). Memorix and Maxell both seem to be the same price. I just like the color of the Maxell DVD-R (Gold) but other than that I thought they were the same. So people have had problems here with Memorix ? I use a X16 Liteon DVD writer with updated firmware. Not sure if that helps.

Sammychan, dragonlor--

If Memorex works for you, don't let others' bad experience convince you that you are wrong. Taiyo Yuden makes very good discs (although their first shots at 16X need improvement), and Verbatim Taiwan discs are made by the same people who make many Memorex discs. Lots of people have different favorites; the problem is that many try to convince others that only their own favorites are any good. Too few people have real technical knowledge or manufacturing experience, and the claims I have seen are often very funny. You will see many people citing Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim as the best because they are very good, very consistent discs that also happen to be the most compatible discs on the market partly because of Japanese political connections. Other good discs get slammed because they often receive less support in Japanese drives and recording results are sometimes poor because of incompatibility, not because of quality. CMC (the producer of Verbatim/Taiwan discs) is usually the biggest target of rebuke. If the discs you have fail in 2-3 years, the recommended Verbatim discs will likely be no better since they all use the same dye.

Joe, I think you are confusing CMC with MCC. CMC Mag supplies their DVD/CD product to many companies such as Memorex, TDK, Imation, and many other brands. MCC is Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Verbatim is a subsidiary to MCC. Vebatims sole provider for DVDs is MCC, except for a few Taiyo Yuden Verbatims floating around out there. (Ask Creaky about them, he would have more details.)

I think the confusion is comming in because of Verbatim's CD-Rs which are CMC Mag. I'm not sure if all Verb CD-Rs are CMC now but the last 2 spindles I bought, Vinyls and regualrs, were both CMC.

I do agree with the point you make though, If the "bad" DVDs are working better for some one than "good" DVDs why try to convert them if they are happy?

From my own personal experience in using Memorex and TDK in the past and then taking the advice of the members on this board I am far happier with the quality that I am getting using Verbs and Taiyo Yudens.

There's no confusion. MCC is one MID code for Verbatim that appears on the stampers MCC supplies manufacturers. Those stampers go to MCC's factory in Hong Kong, to CMC, and to MBI. CMC makes most of Verbatim's discs in their Taiwan factory--one of three in Taiwan. This same factory makes TDK, Imation, HP, Memorex, Mr. Data, Philips, and other brands of discs. Same goes for CD-Rs. The MID code defines the stamper, not the factory. CMC uses Mitsubishi's azo-cyanine dye for Verbatim discs and for other discs as well. That's why MCC-coded discs sometimes show up in other brands. It's also why charges that "CMC makes nothing but garbage" are illogical unless one counts Verbatim Taiwan discs as garbage. They are not, of course. There are other factors at play, as I have mentioned in numerous postings. It is simplistic and misleading to accuse discs that have problems as poor quality unless one actually specifies the parameters that are out of spec. That requires tools not available to the normal user. The originator of the thread had "7 out of 10" disks (sic) in a bundle," and that is a sure sign of incompatibility, not quality. Those who use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim will likely have fewer problems with their drives because those discs are very compatible with most drives. Those who choose to use other disc brands compatible with their own drives should not be attacked for those choices.

@ JoeRyan,
There is some confusion.
In the past Verbatim USED to outsource to CMC magnetics,
But since have changed and now they make there OWN media exclusively,
It is still possible to find some CMC MID disks that are verbatim branded,
But not any that have been stamped recently,
They severed ties with CMC all-together because of quality issues.

See where memorex ranks on this media listing
guide. (Its at the bottom in case your wondering.)

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Everyone knows you CANT make statements like this with memorex,
or anything other than 1st class media.
(I would say only Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim myself.)
