I only thing i know for SURE is,
the best way to burn CMC disks, is to throw them in a FIRE :)

I have found the best to be Ritek DVD - disks.Since I have been using them I have had around 5 failures in 700 burns.Can really reccommend them at $30 for 50 they are a good buy.

I just wanted somewhere to cry about my recent purchase of CMC MAGs.. I looked in the store and they were blue... get home and pop it in... and IMG Burn tells me the rest of the story.. had it not been an impulse buy... I might have looked it up first... anyways... so far they have been fine.. but from all that I've read... I guess I better make coasters

@skitzy,Return them, return them now! Otherwise you'll find yourself watching Sponge Bob Square Pants and liking it! Just tell them the disks didn't burn in your system and get ahold of some of the good stuff, TY, Verbatim, Ritek, etc.

I could look it up... but I'm not shopping at the moment anyhow... so while I'm here I may as well ask... in the past I have usually gotten either Sony, or Memorex, these disc are ok right? now I do know from a glance at the guide (last week)... that each have various manufacturers... as with any large corp... but for the most part.. these are dependable disc, correct?
*now I know you have mentioned Verbatim, and Ritek... and a few various other brands... but generally in my area (sheepfu**erville...a.k.a walmart land)... these two (sony and memorex) are the best deals as far as catching a good sale goes... oh yeah... and occasionally maxell

Sony good, Memosux bad. Memosux has too many people making their disks for them, a real crap shoot. However, if you get the dreaded CMC-MAG disks you have the booby prize. Most people recommend staying far away from memorex, just search for "memosux" and see what pops up. Stick with the Verbs, Sony,Taiyo Yuden, and Ritek.

Memorex uses several factories for sources because their market share in the U.S. would not allow any single source to keep up with demand. Verbatim also uses multiple sources, but those sources often use MCC supplied stampers and dye. If the Sony and Memorex media work for you, those discs are likely to be compatible with your drive and should be OK. People who hate CMC discs generally have compatibility problems with those discs and their drives, or have had some quality problems, or have bought B-grade CMC product that CMC unwisely unloads when HP, Imation, Verbatim, Memorex, Philips, or TDK refuses to accept the lots. "Sony good, Memorex bad" is to simplistic a recommendation.

Not one bad burn ever as far as my Sony DRU-810A.. no matter what media.. even the CMC MAG seem ok so far... It's the life expectancy of them that I worry most about...

That has been my contention for over a year now Skitzy, tried to point out how when I was a newbie and didn't know any better, backed up about 100 or so (the actual number escapes me now) of either Memosux or Phillips or Imation, all CMC-MAG, all burned perfectly, yet within 6 months all would deteriorate to the point they no longer played on any of my standalone players, nor could be read on the same burner they were written on. I have never had any longevity problems with anything but CMC-MAG disks.

@Skitzy, Go ahead and use as many CMC disks as Joe says. In 4 to 6 months down the road you will find out why I don't recommend using these disks. I learned the hard way. Myself, blevitNC and others are trying to save you the heartburn that you will have over the CMC disks.

@Skitzy, just say no to Memosux, its a crapshoot when buying them not knowing the Disk Manufactor ID.
In my opinion the best media u can get is Verbatims, or Taiyo Yudens.

Well it seems that CMC mag and Prodisc both stamp MCC verbatims. I'm not saying that MCC discs are CMC or Prodisc but they manufacture MCCs for verbatim using Verbatim's (Mitsubishi's) quality dyes and quality standards. Just go talk to the hardcore guys and gals over at CDfreaks they'll tell you. Sorry we doubted you Joeryan(or at least I'm sorry.)

Thank you, Joshewah. You are a gentleman. TY and Verbatim have their own weak points that are seldom mentioned on this site (but are the target of complaints on other sites). Every manufacturer runs into problems now and then, but it is not worth attacking them because they generally fix the problems quickly. The long-term problem is intentional lack of support for some Taiwanese brands. That is a political problem beyond customer complaints. Ritek partially solved it by having their Dr. Wang become chairman of the DVD Forum to get some connections with the Japanese drive suppliers. CMC has not been so lucky.
As for discs that fail over time, a big possibility is a poor burn in the first place that allows the disc to work at first but has poorly formed the pit edges. Evidence of this would be a higher jitter curve than PIE curve and a change in the ratio of I3 to I14 pit sizes. Checking those parameters on discs that no longer work would give an indication of whether it was the dye's fault or a poor burn in the first place due to other reasons, such as incompatibility. (The counter argument will be, "What do I care. Crap is crap. Avoid those discs!" That still evades the real question--are the discs bad in the first place or just not compatible with the drive? That is the whole point.)

i read/follow countless threads such as that over there; as i say they're the real experts on what disc is made where etc, we prefer to just use what works 110% for us, and recommend that onwards, not just produce endless quality scan graphs like they do.

I too am a member of CDFreaks and browse there often. I have done my own quality scanning with many different brands (probably not as many as some others here or there). I too believe that CMags and MCC discs may be manufactured in the plants, however, I don't believe they are held to the same standards. Otherwise, there wouldn't be the "compatability" issues that are so widely common. I'm on creaky's side in that I will only use what works for me in burners and on my DVD players, this being said I will only recommend what I have had actual success with and will refrain from recommending media that has failed or produced less than satisfactory result for me. I apologize to joeryan for my behavior earlier in the thread as those actions are not typical of my posts here at AD. This doesn't mean that I agree with what has been said in full or that I'm turning to the dark side, but rather a simple apology.
