1st post guys. I have been burning since Jan of this year. I use Shrink because it seems to be the easiest to use. We have a burner on my wife's computer and is set at 2X which is what I was told to set it on. The problem is the computer in the entertainment room. I can't set the burning speed on Shrink to anything lower than 6X. I use Nero to burn if that makes any difference? Why can't I lower it to 2X? Thanks for any help.

The rule of thumb for burning is to use a burn speed at 1/2 the speed listed on the blank DVD's case. For example use 4X speed with 8X media.

I really don't know why someone would recommend setting your speed to 2X.

Before setting the burn speed with Shrink or any program, make sure the blank DVD is in the burner and spun up. The burner has to take a look at it. Once it has, it can tell the program to list the recommended speeds. If you do not do this, you are presented with a default set of burn speeds which may or may not be suitable.

See if getting it spun up before setting the burn speed gives you a better set of choices.

A couple of notes:

I use Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim 8X -R media. Stick with quality stuff. Sony (made in Japan, not Taiwan) are good as well.

Make sure your burner's firmware is up to date. If you don't know how to check this, let us know. It is usually a matter of going to your burner mfgs website and looking for the firmware there.

BTW, Welcome to Afterdawn. We are always glad to see new people here!

Cheers,
Frank

yeah 2x is too slow

burning at 8x or 4x is the norm , i burn ALL my media at 8x using Taiyo Yuden and get better quality scores at that speed than a slower speed. as said just make sure your firmware on your drive is up to date keep your PC clean (disc cleanup and defragging often) and dont run other programs while in the burning proccess and you should be good to go burning at 8x

Wow! Thanks guys. It was basically a friend that told me the slower the burn speed the better picture quality, etc. I use Sony+R because all the dvd players in the house will play these which isn't the case with others. Frank, if I try putting it in and checking the burn speed do I do this right when I open Shrink up?

I don't post very often but I read all the posts daily, and regarding burning, I nearly always burn at 2.4x

Because my old computer was so cluttered, I decided to format and reload XPpro and SP2 and then reload my favourite programs:- DVDshrink, DVDFabdecrypter, Nero 6... (forgotten the version no.) and to try it all out, I made a back-up of an older movie "The Siege"

Everything was going fine, then when it asked for a blank disc I noticed it was burning at 12x I checked the log file and it did burn at that speed. I would guess that because there was no junk on the computer, that was the reason it worked, but I would be interested if anyone has any observations on this.

The reason I'm telling you all this is that I had forgotten to check any of the settings and most crucially, is that I use TDK+r8x

I have tried the VB's at varying speeds and for some reason they would not work with my burner, a rebadged Benq DW1620.

I also agree it is very important not to multi-task.

What is the rated speed of those blank sony discs? 8x/16x?

Is this pc a single DVD-RW drive or dual drive-having dvd-rom and DVD-RW drives?

Are you allowing DVD Shrink to autoburn with Nero?

When using DVD Shrink to autoburn with nero:

I've got a single drive pc,and DVD Shrink has very few increments to burn.2.4x and max speed. Dual drives,I have all possible burn speeds available.

One way I get around it with DVD Shrink on that pc- single drive:
Backup using DVD Shrink and autoburn with Nero-and remember where that movie goes. I always name mine with the correct title. When the DVD-RW drive spits out the original, cancel out of DVD Shrink. Then open up dvd shrink/click the open files tab on top/locate that movie file on your harddrive/click on it/ok/ and should go to the backup options-after a quick analysis.

Click on burn speed:You should have all burn speed available to pick from. You will have to send those temp files to another folder. If you have limited HD space, you may not want to try this.

Slower better? Yes with low quality burners and media. Not with quality drives and quality media like Verbatim 16x and Taiyo yuden. I have to burn the Verbs at least 8x for fewest errors. 2.4x burning with Verbatim +16x is a major no-no for me. These discs were designed to be burned at that speed. Can't say the same to other 16x media like TDK,Office Depot, and Sony.

kman69: What is the brand name and model#'s of your burners?

Firmware can also contribute to the increments of burning.

The rate speed is 16X for the Sony+R.
It is a single drive.
Don't know if this is right but in Nero it says Sony Q30AVYYS3 for that drive.
I am autoburning with Nero.

Will try that way with Shrink and let you know what happens.

Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Can't find the file specified.
I use DVDFab for Sony and Disney DVDs and then burn with Shrink but it still will only let me go as low as 6X

Setting the burn speed with Shrink.
After Shrink gets done analyzing, you make all the changes, ie, remove unneeded audio and sub-pictures, etc. When you get ready to start the backup process, you would click the "Backup!" button.
This opens the Backup DVD menu.
On the right is the Burn Settings tab. Click that and that is where you set the burn speed.
AS mentioned, make sure your blank is in and spun up in the drive before clicking the "Backup!" button.

I'd sure like to see a Nero log file. That will tell us about the media and the drive, among other things.

Find your log files here:
If Nero 7...
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log
If Nero 6...
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

Just copy/paste the last log file (there is a date in log) and be sure to edit your name and Nero serial number out.

I have no idea if this is what you need to see?

The last couple of times Shrink let me set the burning speed at:
1X
2X
2.4X

I set it at 2.4 and when it started burning it burned at 6X as always.
I have tried to go into Nero and set the burn speed at 2.4X but it keeps burning at 6X. I guess it's not that big of a deal because all the movies seem to play fine and look ok. Like I said, a friend of mine who has been doing this for a looong time told me the slower the speed the better quality etc.

Your burner firmware is way out of date, current is YYS7 you can go here to get the latest and flash your drive, this will enable the drive recognize newer media and write speed.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2239

You DMA is off for this drive, you need to get it turned back on, DMA should be enabled for all drives.

You may want to update your Nero to the last good working version of Nero 6, which is 6.6.0.18

You don't need to get rid of your programs, you have plenty of HDD space. To free up memory just make sure you don't have them running in the background, when you burn make sure that is the only program open. No internet surfing.

If it makes you feel better I burn all my disks at 6x with no problems. Newer 16x media is fine to do this with.

BTW this stuff here.....

...is your RAM, not your hard drive space. So it really does not matter how much stuff you have on your hard drive. Unless you have so much you start getting "Not enough room" type errors, which you haven't.

Is this affected by the speed of your burner? What speed would you use if your burner was 8x and you were using 16x disks, would you still burn at 8x?

Thanks

I have an old burner that only burns at 4x, so I burn everything on this at 4x. My new burners I burn 16x at 6x or 8x, I have burned at 16x just to test out the burns and they have been good. If you are using good media, you burner firmware is up to date and is not giving you any problems, and you make sure to set your target size at 4334 to stay away from the edge, your burns should come out fine.
