S-Video vs. Component cables-which gives a better image quality?

Searched for this through the forums, but there were so many irrelevent results I gave up. I'm looking for new cables to replace my AV(composite) cables to improve the image quality of my PlayStation 2 games. I'm also looking to get a high-definition TV to replace the one I currently have(it's not as if the image the quality is bad, it's good just with composite cables, but I want something better). The real question is, which cables in between S-Video and Component would make my PlayStation 2 games look better on the TV I'm getting(didn't decide which yet, but I don't want one that's too big)?

I bought and HD LCD tv (LCD IS BEST FOR GAMES)it has DVI but it came with a converter to conect to the DVI then on the other side its HDMI (what the ps3 will have for better quality) What I am trying to say is that S-video is the older type and HDMI/DVI are the new ones. I still use s-video with my older tv.

Okay, so Component cables gives a better image quality? Or is it S-Video(probably not since you say that S-Video is the oldest of the two)?

yeah component cables are better than s-video but they also cost twice as much as the s-vdieo cable.

Does HDMI even work with the PlayStation 2(the slim model)?

No, unfortunately the PS2 does not support HDMI, so the best you can get from it is the component type connection, which is still very good. HDMI will really only make a differents on high quality HDTVs running at high resolutions. The component cables, if your TV supports them, is defintely the way to go with the PS2.

componet is way better, because it breaks down red, green, and blue.i have a 360, and a tv with a dvi port. to convert my 360 to dvi is $100. is there really a $100 difference?

The pecking order goes like this, worst quality to the best:
RF Coax cable --- commonly found as either RG59 or RG6, this is the lowman on the totem poll when it comes to picture quality. It combines the video and audio into a single cable, stereo into mono as well.
Composite RCA plugs --- these are pretty common, the standard red, white and yellow cables. This sends the video and audio single separately to your TV set. Also sends the audio in a stereophonic quality. A step up from Coaxial.
S-Video --- The next step from the YELLOW plug of the RCA plugs, simply clears the video up a little more. It does NOT enhance the audio signal any further.
Component --- These were first seen on the old-style rear projection TV sets, the ones with the huge red green and blue lights that illuminated the screen. A step up from the S-Video, the Component cables (red, green, blue patch) split the video signal up even further into it's base colors of red green and blue and fire them independant of each other through the TV tube and/or screen. You are starting to get into low-level HDTV applications with these. Again, it does NOT enhance the audio output as you still still need the red and white plugs. (Hopefully by this point if you are using Component cables you are also using some type of digital/optical audio cable.)
NOTE: Up until this point the preceding cables and plugs have all been analog type. Past here will be dealing with digital.
DVI --- stands for "Digital Video Interface". starting to get into PC quality video with this, a step up from the component plugs, however the drawback with DVI is it has no audio capability at all.
HDMI --- stands for "High-Definition Multimedia Interface". The highest quality connection available on the market to date, also the most expensive. Combines video and audio into one cable, razor sharp picture clarity and decent audio. (I still prefer Digi/Opt for my sound) The biggest drawback for me with using HDMI is that it also enables content providers to utilize HDCP or "High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection" which simply put is macrovision for HD. I won't go into detail on HDCP as it can be read up on at various sites. Enjoy ^^

Okay, so now I've decided that once I have the time, I'll go get some component video cables. Problem is, the only cables I find are S-Video cables for the PlayStation 2. Where would I be able to find Component cables, new or used(Canadian retailer, please, and not online)?

Especially considering that's Canadian money. It's about 5% less, I think, in American money. When did you get the component cables?

those are the exact same ones I have and they are the official sony. I tried the monster brand component cables for ps2 which I got from future shop also (those were more expensive) but, they didn't have audio cables so I returned them and got these which are just as good as the monster ones and they have audio (I guess monster expect everyone that's gonna use component video will also be using digital audio).
