Okay guys, I know that you must have seen the title and be like WTF but I am a total newbie so please pardon me if the question is "dumb". My situation is this, my DVD player does not play DVD+R but I recently got some +R lightscribe discs which I think are really cool - my question then is this, can anything be done by means of software to make a +R disc be recognized as a -R disc?
I read a long time ago about booktypes and stuff but I never really understood it

What is your burners model number and current firmware version and what software do you use to make your backups?

Ok - to be honest I am not too sure of the model of the lightscribe burner but I also have the NEC 3550-A DVD Burner with the latest firmware installed (1.06) - the software I mostly used for backups is AnyDVD + CloneDVD (but I am willing to use another one if it is possible with another app).

You can booktype with the NEC drive if using modified firmware...try 1.Y6 from here:
http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3550/
Download Binflash Win32 GUI from here:
http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/
Make sure your drive is empty and follow the directions for flashing your drive. Reboot and install this program:
http://www.cdspeed2000.com/
Under the extras tab, change your DVD+R to be booktyped to DVD-ROM and you are set...burn with your NEC and then burn the label in your lightscribe drive. CDSpeed will also tell you what your other drive is and what the current version of firmware is...this drive may be capable of booktyping as well.

My lightscribe drive is a Samsung SH-W162L - any possibility of booktyping using this drive?

Well i tried the tool with my lightscribe drive but it said booktyping failed - seems I will have to flash this drive but so far my search for the latest firmware has come up short.
Does anyone know if the samsung flash will work also the procedure to flash this drive?

If you crossflash to another manufacturers firmware you may lose your lightscrive abilities...the NEC is a better burner than your other drive, I would burn with the NEC and use the lightscribe feature in the other drive...if that is what you are wanting to do.

That is what I am doing now - burning with NEC and lighscribing with the Lacie drive but to be honest I would prefer to be able to do it all from one but hey I am happy for now and since from all my searching last night I couldn't find a way to upgrade my firmware I will just to continue as I am doing now.

The samsung firmware doesn't work with the Lacie, at least i dont know how to flash it as the flashing utility is telling me that the drive selected is not correct - maybe there is a manual way of doing it?
I already flashed the NEC and that is going great but I would have preferred to be able to can burn and lable using the Lacie drive with booktyping to DVD-ROM enabled but as said before still I am happy for now
