First of all my massive apologies in advance for asking what i'm sure is a very stupid question, but i have been on this site for the best part of two hours and am still struggling in the dark!
Basically I have just got a new computer (my first!) with two drives capable of burning dvd's and i would like to know how i can burn copy protected dvd's.
I have seen loads of ads for dvd burning software which say they will get around the copy protection software. are these the way to go? If so, can i buy one product that will do it all? (ie. i have a copy protected dvd, and a blank one and off i go.) i saw a thread here that talked about AnyDVD and then clone dvd. is that what all this software is like? Also, will they come with simple step by step instructions? (remember i'm an idiot!)
Or can i do it for free? (obviously the ideal choice!) Again, i have looked at the guides here and seen stuff like Nero and dvd shrinker and SmartRipper etc. but i keep getting lost after about step 3. (I have even downloaded SmartRipper and managed to rip a dvd into a VOB file, but now i have no idea what to do with it, or even what a VOB file is. it's just sitting on my hard drive reminding me how stupid i am!) How many pieces of software do i need? Am i right in that i need something to rip the data from the dvd and then something else to burn it onto my blank dvd? I have some burning software that came with my machine (roxio from sonic i think) that lets me copy dvds that have no copy protection stuff on. i've already done this successfully a few times. Can i use this at any step?
I guess what i am saying is that if anyone out there could take pity on me and post (or link me to) an idiot's guide to taking a copy protected dvd and copying it to a blank dvd (what things i need to have/download, where i can find out how to use them, what it is i am actually doing etc.) that would be brilliant! Bearing in mind I am not very technologically minded at all, so idiot speak is necessary!

There are plenty of free programs that will help you do this, here are some sites that will give you links to software needed and show you what the programs will do.
Since you have Nero you can also use Nero Recode to compress your file, if you do no want to use DVD Shrink. Same developer only more up to date. However DVD Shrink will rip older movies on its own and Recode will not.
There are trial versions available for AnyDVD a driver which runs behind Recode and other programs to break encryption. And its companion CloneDVD2 which will compress your file to fit a single layer disk and burn.
VOB means Video object it is the video info that was on the dvd what you need is aprogram that will burn that info on to a blank dvd there are free programs that will do that for you DVD Decrypter will do it do a google search for DVD Decrypter
