ok heres the thing, I don't know much about this stuff. I just got a dvd burner yesterday, but theres a problem.

When i Use HP DVD+R 16x dvds (labeling dvds), they won't playback in any dvd players, only on computer.

When I use maxell DVD+R 8x dvds, they playback on my dvd player.

So my question, what is the difference between the two? Why won't the hp ones playback? What is 8x and 16x?

I'm pissed because i just bought all these dvds and now they work! And i would LIKE to use the dvds i bought to burn labels on also!

Not all DVD media are the same when it comes to quaility.

The HP media more then likly are cheap. Which means your DVD player will not bebale to read them. The cheaper the media the more problems you will have. (compatiblity issues/read errors)

Below is a guide which tells you what class your media is in by the Manufatures ID#. If you are burrning video files then you will want to stick with Class 1 media.

To find out what class media you have, you need to find the manufatures ID#

You can do this if you have Nero. Put in a blank DVD and go to Nero Info Tool. Run it and it will scan your drive and the media. After it scans click on the DISC tab and look down the list till you find Manufacture ID#.

Now go to the link below and find that Manufacture ID# in the list and see what class they are.

Other programs list the actual Manufacturer's ID, like DVD Decryptor.

I wanted to answer your question on what the difference is between DVD+R media and DVD-R media. Plus the difference between 8x and 16x.

DVD-R and DVD+R are different formats. They write the information differently onto the disc. Most DVD players are more comaptible with DVD-R disc. That is why I will suggest to try to booktype the DVD+R media to DVD-ROM.

The diffrence between 8x and 16x is simple. That is how fast the DVD media can be recorded to. Of course the higher the number the faster the DVD can burn. But most members will tell you to burn no faster then 4x. Or burn at half the recomended speed of the media. So if it is 16x burn at 8x

Since you have bought all these DVD+R disc and they dont seem to work then I will give you 2 more possiblites that might help you.

#1 -- Go to your DVD standalone player brand website and see if they have a firmware upgrade for your unit. If there is an update for your unit then upgrade to it. It could be possible that new firmware will be comaptible with the media your having trouble with. (Most firmware updates are updates to make more media compatible to the player)

#2 -- you can try to booktype the DVD+R media to DVD-ROM. There is a possibilty that it could make them compatible with your player if you booktype it to DVD-ROM.

You can use IMGBurn to booktype to DVD-ROM. Download the program from the link below then follow the images I made for you to set IMGBurn to booktype your DVD+R media to DVD-ROM.
