Hi folks !!!

I have tried enough and searched a lot on the net. But cant seem to find out, as to how can one convert VOB files to a format on hard drive so that they can be played.

This is my scenario:

Used DVD Decrypter to copy a movie and it formed a VIDEO_TS folder with 6 VOB files.

Now instead of burning the VOB files to a dvd (which I can), I want to convert them to a format which I can play on my laptop and want to keep them on my hard drive.

Is there a software that I can use to do this (free software) and a guide.

Would appericiate if someone can respond to the above.

Thanx

Err... just use a software DVD player. Intervideo WinDVD or PowerDVD will play your VOB's just fine. It can play from the DVD file structure or just the VOB if you want.

If you have Nero just use the player that came with it. No conversion required.

hey guyz !!!

thanx for that. thats was so dumb of me, wasting so much time on the net. i played the files with my div x player and the real player. but i have 2 new problems now.

I cant seem to play them with the power dvd thing. My power dvd thing is bundled with dell media experience. How do i play with power dvd ?

And also, as i said there are 6 VOB files. Out of which 4 big ones. Will i have to click on each one of them to play after one finishes. or can i make a single VOB file ? so that it keeps playing and i watch the whole movie, instead to click again and again.

Thanx again guyz.

DVD burners are so affordable now,
I would suggest getting a burner and making 1:1 backups,
Using DVD Shrink after ripping with DVD D (as you
mentioned before.)

With good DVD media (+r booktyped to dvd-rom),
You should have a 95% compatiabilty with stand
alond dvd players (older ones),
And over 99% on PC and newer standalones.
That would be the best route.
Cheers!

Hey guyz !!!

I managed to create a single big VOB file. played around with dvd ripper a bit. my only problem now is - how do i get my cyber link power dvd to play that file. because that plays my dvd's on the whole screen. although the real player and div x player are able to read the file but they dont play the VOB file or the dvd on the whole screen (have an 18'' laptop). any suggestions.

I know there is always an option og burning the movie to a dvd. but i borrow these from a library and really dont wanna back them up unless they are really good ones. i just watch them on my days off and then delete them. thats the whole point for me to keep them on my hard drive for a while.

i bascially want to watch the damn VOB file through my cyber link thing on the whole screen.

Plez suggest.

I would suggest using VLC from videolan. You can get it by going to the software tab and clicking on video players. It is the simpliest program around for all types of formats. Simply click on "file" then pick either "open file" to play avi's or any other type of file like ogg, etc... or click "open disc" to play a DVD. I think (haven't tried) that you would pick "open directory" and just choose the video ts directory on your harddrive. It is a great program for a laptop because it is very small and more importantly, it's free :)

Thanks for that Irish. I forgot about VLC. Did have it, but then got rid of, because I never used it much. Will try it.

I am still wondering if someone can explain to me whether I can play my VOB files with the power dvd. The wholdpackage is Dell Media Experience. Cyber Link's - Power DVD is part of it.

Lets hope someone does.

In the mean time, thanks a ton guys for helping me out here.

You should be able to play your movie on Power DVD. Should be a place to select where you get your files from. I use Nero,s player and I can select Play from folder. Since I don't remember that much about Power Dvd. I suggest you Push and prod every button on the player. To get the movie to play full screen go to the options and see if there is a Pan&scan setting. Like I said I don't remember that much about it. Also try double clicking on the Playing screen that gets my player to fill the screen. Sorry I can't be more help to you. Just FIDDLE with it and see what comes up. Found this link
