OK I want to shrink and burn some DVD files to play in my DVD player or Xbox 360 with no surround sound system or anything, just the DVD player and my HDTV but needed to know if AC3 5.1ch was really needed to watch movies because it takes up alot of space on the disc. Do you need both formats on the burned DVD disc? (5.1 and 2 ch.)

This question basically applies to all movies that are burned. Is AC3 5.1 only needed if you plan on using a surround sound system?

So AC3 5.1 isn't needed then? I can just stick with the AC3 2 CH. instead?

if you burn the 5.1, it's automatically converted to 2-channel when you play the disc without a surround sound system. the 2 ch. might be fine right now, but do you plan at playing the movies at all on a surround sound system ever? if there's a slight possibility, it's worth keeping the 5.1. but if not, that's a little bit less you'd have to cut off of the credits/extras or whatever you may choose to remove.

As a test I unchecked all of the AC3 2-channel boxes on my "Crash" DVD, leaving only the 5.1. The result was missing audio from the menu. Zero audio anywhere in the menu. This may not be a big deal, but this does prove that just keeping the 5.1 audio could cause you to loose audio on other parts of the DVD.

whenever i remove sound, i've always simply re-authored, so i've never noticed that issue before.
