Welcome, Histchler!

You need to provide a little more information here. Designations can be a little confusing sometimes, so if you can give us the brand and model number of your drive, plus any indications most likely on the front plate, like if the DVD R/RW logo is present. You can also look in your device manager and it'll usually give a clue as to what it actually is.

There are a lot of friendly and most helpful folks here, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

Cheers!

Ron

Thanks for the warm welcome rcm. ;)

In device manager under DVD/CD-ROM Drives it says

_NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD
JLMS DVD-ROM XJ-HD166

I have 2 drives, the top one says DVD Rom and at the side it says compact disc. On the second drive it says Compact disc writable and on the other side of the same drive it says DVD Rewritable.

That's all I can see. What does the rewritable mean? I probably sound really stupid, that's because I am, a little, also new to this type of stuff.

Thank you (so much) rcm and david for your replies I really appreciate your help.

@Histchler,

You can in fact burn DVDs and CDs with your NEC DVDRW. You cannot burn DLs though. If I read your post correctly, it looks like you may be limited to the DVD+ format only. You can get a user's manual here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p64593/en/index.htm

Good luck!

That explains a lot. So, if I wanted to burn DLs what would I need? I mean is there any sort of external drive I could buy?

You would have to buy a DL burner. You can buy an external DL burner, but be prepared to shell out some $$ on it. You can also just replace the one you have now with an internal. Check around online at the major vendors or your local superstores where you live. I do reccommend the BenQ 1650/1655. Solid burner at a reasonable price.
