Hi, I just wondered what the method is for backing up DVD-9s to DVD+R Double Layer discs - it may seem like a stupid question because there is no compression/authoring involved, but I've read something about needing an MDS file with an ISO, in order to write the layer-break properly? Does this mean you have to rip it as an image rather than ripping the individual files? Could anyone elaborate on this for me, I don't really want to turn my DL discs into coasters!

Many thanks

Try ImgBurn it works very well for DL Backups. Rip your file first with DVDFab Decrypter, then follow the guide on building an iso. ImgBurn will then calculate and burn your DL.

It is better to rip as an image using either DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn as both do an excellent job with Dual Layer. ImgBurn is the updated version of the DVD Decrypter burning engine, it is by the same developer.

Thanks for the quick reply arniebear! - I didn't realise ImgBurn was developed by the DVD Decrypter people. Just to clarify, what WOULD happen IF you ripped the separate files and then burnt the files using DVD-Video in Nero (for example)? Or, if you wanted to author the DVD first (still larger than 4.35GB), and then burn it to a DL disc? Would it be compatible in a stand-alone DVD player?
Thanks again

I am not a big fan of Nero my DL's I have done have never come out using the program. But you may have better luck than me. Yes you can reauthor you might want to use a program like VobBlanker to blank out what you want and then process it. Then run the file through ImgBurn on Build and Iso and it should calculate the layer break. I don't generally reauthor DL's so this is my advice on it :)

OK so I'm trying to create an image from my files using Imgburn, how do I get it to create the layer break? When I click the calculator, the window which appears completely confuses me.

Also, can you set DVD Decrypter to read the layer break information direct from the source when creating an ISO?

Thanks

Yes you can have Decrypter read from the source..you choose iso read mode and then when that is done you will choose iso write open the MDS file that is created by Decrypter which contains the layer break information and have it burn. If the movie is not encrypted with Sony ARccOS or Puppetlock you should not have a problem, however if it is it is best to run AnyDVD behind Decrypter to rip, so the protection is removed.

Yeh I have read that guide, but when I get to:

"Then press the Calculator and you will see a similar window to this, where you should choose the layer break"

...I get stuck - I just want the layer break in the same place as the original, but with the DVD I am using, there are 5 or 6 places marked as "excellent" and I have no idea which one to choose.

Thanks for the replies

If ImgBurn marks as excellent, just choose one and enjoy.
