So for some weird reason (i wish i knew) my 360 it's been giving me problems.

Every time i turn the console on, i put a disc in and it says Open Tray, like there's no disc in it or it shows the "put disc in a 360 console" message.

It was working perfect until 4 days ago. After i put the disc in and out like 20 times, it works ok, but it's annoying when ppl are calling you to play a game you know.

I am still running Xtreme 2.0, since my computer at home doesnt recognize the drive, even tho i got the sata card with the VIA VT6421 chipset on it. I was wondering if anyone know why is this happening.

Oh, the game i'm trying to play is an original, just so you guys know.

Thanks for all your help, thank you !

originals or backups are doing this to you?

Originals give me "put disc into xbox360 console" message, backups are giving me the "Open Tray" message.

If i try an ORIGINAL and i put it in and out like 20 times it works, i haven't really tried the backups for that long.

Have you done the POT tweak? If you have, maybe you're burning out the laser. If not, maybe you need to do it.

Hmmm, so i leave the console disconnected and conect it when i want to play. Then, after like 10 tries it starts showing the "disc is dirty" error, i keep pressing the Play Game button for like 7 times and it works.

This is an original, just in case, on my sammy drive, now back to original firmware.

So here's my deal:
A friend bought a 360 back in the day...
... said it ran fine for a while, no issues....
...then slowly but surely it sometimes started not reading discs...
Eventually, it becomes a hassle and he brings it to me...

My diagnosis:
bad dvd drive or laser?

The thing will read CD's (store-bought), but no dvd's or games. When I first got the console it would say "insert into 360 console" and give dirty disc errors and such when 360 games were inserted... I tried the pot tweak, and now it reads only cd's... always starts "reading", then (without spinning-up) returns to "open tray."

I've replaced the laser now with a brand spankin new HD63, to no avail. Same issue... CD's play fine.

(One question, besides my main what the F*$& is the problem question, is: why, when I first did the pot tweak on the old laser did it stop giving me dirty disc errors (now it "reads" and "open tray"s)... and if it were because I burnt the laser why hasn't it reverted to dirty disc errors again after replacement...)

(are there two different lasers in there? one for dvd and one for cd? I know there are two "pot-tweak screws" for lack of a better term)

Anything helps!
Cordially,
Beams

this day and age never do anything with POT, if you dont know what it is, don't look it up.

Ok you said you even flashed it back to orginal.bin and still orginal games wont work, yeah i think your dvd drive has dirty lens or something.
Not sure what you should do, lens cleaning DVD disc?

Update to xtreme 5.2 Fixes most open tray issues. Use xtreme bootmaker to hexedit the via chipset into mtkflash and flash normally.

This problem seems to be spreading like wild fire. I got the same exact problem, I get open tray errors with all my original Xbox 360 games but all the backups play perfectly fine only sometimes the backups give me the "Open Tray" thing (And I get dirty disk errors sometimes with the backups). I then flashed the drive back to the original firmware (orig.bin) but it still wouldn't read any of my originals. I'm using the Xtreme 5.2a firmware (I even tried 5.2a,B,C,& D)....My problems didn't start happening until about 2 weeks after I flashed the drive....that's so retarded so I think the firmware is what's destroying the Xbox 360 drives. I hope everyone can get the word out about this. These problems were non-existant up until the firmware was flashed with the Xtreme Firmware so it has to be the firmware screwing the drive(s) up.

Xbox 360 = Samsung TS-H943 MS25 (got a new Xbox 360 coming possibly the nasty MS28 drive :(

Firmware = 5.2a

Oh, I forgot to mention... the only reason I have the xbox is because when inserting an original game it gave the "please insert into 360 console" error...

So anyways, my point: THE PROBLEMS WITH THE 360 WERE EXISTANT BEFORE FLASHING DRIVES... continue on.

However if anyone wants to burn me that 0800 disc that'd be sweet.

One of the 2 360's I have at my house im working on now, had those errors and was untampered..original firmware-until yesterday..:) So, those errors seem to be getting common in general, not just flashed drives.

my 360's a samsung drive flashed with an early firmware was ok for a long while with all types of media. when i go to play a backup from cold when its been turned off for a while it plays no probs but if i try to change games it gives me an open tray msg, but if i put an original game it plays no probs apart from the occasional " to play this disc insert into a xbox 360 console" msg, reboot fine , it plays. i find if u turn ur 360 off for 10mins and it cools down they boot up so i thought maybe an overheating issue, i have noticed the time needed to cool the 360 down is getting longer. i tried the elastic band trick (link here) http://www.360mods.net/News/article/sid=71.html and no luck,
The geezer who flashed mine is certain that firmware version 5.2 sorts the problem out as hes seen and fixed many 360's with this firmware, in his experience this problem only arose with 360's that recieved the fall 2006 xbox live update, any how im gonna reflash mine with 5.2 in the meantime and i'll try and report the outcome.

I really think it's the firmware causing these problems. I had no issues up until I flashed my drive with the Xtreme Firmware. Clearly the people who made the firmware acknowledge that it's a problem because they released a so called fix for it in the Xtreme Firmware 5.1 realease (http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1556.nfo). So I'm sticking with my hypthesis that these "open tray" errors are caused by the firmware. Hopefully they will look into what could possibly erase these issues. I'm sure if it was on Microsoft's behalf they would surely release a fix/update to fix this problem. I'm not sure what's the cause but who knows.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but my 360 has been suffering alot from the "open tray" error lately. Before that rarely happened, maybe once a month.

Anyway, I'm looking into flashing to 5.2x firmware, BUT my ms25 drive is already flashed with Xtreme 3.3: anything new I should know of? Can I just flash the 5.2 on top of 3.3?

can anyone give me a quick evaluation of steps to perform?
(it's been 6 months, and things have changed drastically it seems - reading about lock-on, enable0800, firmguard only makes me confused. Don't worry I still remember how to disassemble and hooking up a cable ;p just need pointers for flashing.

so hope you guys can help me out, TIA.

Just when I searched around for guides, I came across this rubberband mod - so I figured I'd give it a try anyway (since I had to open my 360 anyway), and if it didn't I'd just flash it with 5.2 and lo and behold: the rubberband solved my "open tray" error :)

Ok, i have the same problem lately. I have tried the rubberband trick. I used samorig to flash back to original firmware but not real sure if it flashed back or not. I am at a loss since I now cannot play any games and was wondering if anyone has solved this issue yet
