Greetings all
I'm new to this DVD burning caper. My machine is a blank canvas and I'm trying to get all the software info I can before I attempt to copy. What are the best and simplest applications and procedures?

you will get differing opinions, and that's not a bad thing. The best thing I can tell you is that is is a personal preference. My advise to you is to go to www.slysoft.com and puchase the AnyDVD, clonedvd2 bundle. I think it is $59.99 if you buy both programs. That is all the software you will need.
However if you prefer to save money, I would suggest still getting the AnyDVD atleast (this program removes all copyright protections on the dvd) one time purchase, lifetime updates...
After that it is a crapshoot, I like dvdfab decrypter, which takes the files from your dvd and places them on your hard drive. I have also heard great things about a newer program called ripit4me, however I have not used it so I can only tell you what I've heard about it. For burning there are a few programs you can choose from... 1click dvd copy, Nero, or clonedvd2 like I mentioned earlier.
A must have program is Vob Blanker if you are going the free software route, it fixes all bad and broken files that are placed in the dvd to cause you headaches. (I think ripit4me also does this)
If youdecide to get AnyDVD, lately I have been using it as my ripper (putting files on your hardrive) with great results. It also fixes the bad VOB files I talked about earlier.

Spend the few bucks and get AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 from SlySoft.com. Couldn't be any simpler....

a lot of newbies, my brother included, just want something simple to do it all for them...... AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 does it all. Most member here agree... those are the easiest and user friendly for newbies. So is DVDFab Plat. So is InterVideo CopyDVD 4, and the list goes on... but the most popular is AnyDVD + CloneDVD2..... get your free 21 day trial versions here:

Yep u cant go wrong with the Anydvd+anything combo, like everybody has said, if u want to spend money, its the best buy for the money.
However if u dont want to spend money there are free ways of doing it too. here they are

Two things you have to know aside from what everybody else has said:
First, use good media. Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden is the best, and often the same price or close to any of the retail garbage. Don't waste your time with TDK, Memorex, or Bob's Special 'o' the Day.
Second, the hardest thing you probably will have to deal with is backing up a DVD-9, which holds 8.5 Gb, onto a DVD-5, which only holds 4.7 Gb. DLs are still rather expensive, although the prices have come down greatly this summer to $2 per disc, often less on sale. If you have the money, you can use Double-Layer Verbatims to back up anything that won't fit onto a regular, cheap, single-layer DVD-5. If not, then you will have to either cut out extras, split the DVD (espcially for episodes of shows), or use compression - and maybe a combination of all those. Compression programs like DVDShrink and CloneDVD2 are good if you only have to compress a few percent, but if you have to compress a lot, consider checking out DVD-Rebuilder with Cinema Craft Encoder (DVD-RB w/ CCE is a common abbreviation around here.) Even then, even the best compression programs produce lousy results, so keep the DLs in mind.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:
1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:

4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!
