Hey I've always had this question I've been unsure of.

I know that most retail software is intended for one computer, and is registered to that computer.

I have had Norton Antivirus 2006 subscription active for about half a year already. Let's say I want to re-install Windows. After I do so, this means I have to reinstall Norton Antivirus. Will the subscription still be valid after Norton Antivirus is installed again?

On an older computer, I had Norton Antivirus 2005. I had that antivirus installed for about half a year. Then I re-installed Windows, and then re-installed the Antivirus. The subscription then started all over again and I got another 12 months. Is that for real, or am I somewhat cheating?

Sounds like an error on the software's part to me.

Well for most software, does it mean that if you re-install it on the same computer, it will continue the subscription right where it left off?

I use McAfee too. Actually, MA Security Suite 2007.
I've used norton antivirus before. Unlike other software, norton dosent check the subscription status online. It simply creates a new one on a fresh install and stores it on a file named 'Catalog.LiveSubscribe' on the computer. After uninstalling the product, if this file gets deleted, it simply makes the file again with the fresh subscription.
Sym. is bound to fix this in future versions of their products, mainly LiveUpdate.
