I did get this disk to play in a stand alone player and it was just random pieces of video from various things on my HD in the last year!! crazy it was skippping around like clicking through channels.?
My pc died so I aquired another -p3 384mb ram 120 gb hd XP pro sp2.
so far I've tried the latest versions of AnyDVD w/shrink, dvdfab to Vob Blanker to shrink, ripit4me, dvd clone. As soon as I get to shrink or clone it crashes while its backing up. freezes the whole pc. it starts by the "time remaining" never goes down. Then a couple minutes later the buffer memory falls down to zero and thats it. crash.

Ok let's see it sounding more like a pc problem than a dvd problem.
Are you up to date on the all windows xp updates?
Have the latest DirectX from Microsoft - 9.0c?
If not here's a link
The crashing can also be the pc overheating. Keep airflow open -pc may need to be dusted out. You can use a can of compressed air.
Check the memory - run a test & make sure all is okay there. You can try memtest
edit: fix link

XP and directx are completely up to date, so are all the Apps I formentioned. This is a new PC I just put together and the side pannels are not on so airflow is not an issue, Also did a memory test to %100 w/ no errors. Also all other dvds rip fine. Only issue I am having is with a series just released on aug 15th, I am convinced now it is a new copyright protection that crashes the transcode process, and noone here has come across it yet>

Did it ever dawn on you that you just might have a BAD pressed disc, since all other discs are working? Try to get another copy of the disc. Binkie7 tried everything for you and nothing has worked. It seems the only solution left: bad press!

actually that did occur, however I have this problem with 2 disks now both are new releases from hanna barbera both released on aug 15th. I buy all their releases when they come out the last group (3 series, and I've backed up about 26 disks) released at the begining of the year worked fine. Now this second wave just released that I just bought is the problem.
and so far its 2 different disks from different series released by the SAME label. This is why I believe it is something more than a bad disk, and because its so new maybe I'm the first person running into backup problems with it.

Do you maybe have a friend that does DVD backups? You could take the two discs to that pc and see if they'll rip and burn.
Edit: you might have the first discs that AnyDVD can't do? LMAO

I don't think that will do to much because when I started this thread I was on another PC (thats still running in the other room) Just by chance my PC other pc (the one I'm on now) died so After I rebuilt it the other day I decieded to try ripping here on a brandy new box to rule out the problem as hardware specific. So basically this has happend w/ 2 disks on 2 different boxes so far. I will see if I can find someone else to experiment on, I am very greatful to all for giving me advice especially binkie7!!!
This might just be the new copyright scheme that works, when you think about it what better place to try it out. Theese series are rare and expensive and when you transcode theeese old cartoons they look the same because the original was never that sharp in the first place.
looks like they got us for now until theese backup apps give an update that fixes it. Somehow it makes the PC run out of memory and crash. Now I,m really gonna go out on a limb here because I really don't understand the dvd process THAT deep but, could it be some new kind of fake cell or/ infinate loop, I also remember hearing the term cycle/cylinder redundcy. (lol please don't laugh at my ignorance)

Hi nitepeopl
Well you've thrown everything at it - so I'm at a loss now. Even did different pc diagnostic/maintenance stuff.
Unless they have some type of mastering defect on them - but RipIt4Me or AnyDVD should handle this.
The cyclic redundancy error can mean the disc has a defect like scratched, dirty bad press or a copy protection thing but again the programs you used should have handled it.
I would love to get my hands on this Hong Kong Phooey just for the challenge. Maybe I'll try and pick it up next week or so.

Yeah I'd like to get my hands on the exact disc he's having trouble with and then another press of the same disc. The fun's in the hunt(for success)! I'd probably be glued to pc, obsessed, until I got a good backup.

I'm getting this error as well but with Stay Alive movie. I get the "out of memory" message when using shrink. The only way I could back up the movie was to use DVDFab decripter and just copy the movie only then taking anything unwanted so that I didn't have to use shrink. I'm going to try defragging the hard drive tonight thought.

Hi bhowes
Welcome to aD
Stay Alive has Macrovision's Ripguard on it plus the other junk they stick on it.
You can also run the files thru VobBlanker then open those in Shrink or use RipIt4Me. Both will work if you wanted to do the full movie.
Guides are on the 1st of the thread.
Definitely do a system defrag and disc cleanup - good idea to do at least 1x a week.

hold on hold the fort! I decided to step back and start over again, I've been getting confused w/ all the different errors, and rember I switched pcs in the middle of it all. I still don't know what the problem was with the first pc, but I tried to back up an older movie again to rule out the system because it was new, and guess what got the same freeze!! I poured all the guts out of the pc and realized that the cpu fan was unplugged!! so my freeze up was overheating! and binkie7 did mention that. So I fixed the fan and continued to backup an older title and sucess. Now i'm going to try theese damm cartoons again to see what happens, i'll report back.

Oh you definitely have to keep us posted on those cartoons now :)
Hopefully it was just the fan on pc for the reason the cartoons stopped too on this pc.
Good to hear you haven't given up! I won't either or garmoon

I did run Stay Alive through VobBlanker version 2.1.1.0 but had the same problem. I'm also having the same issue with The Wild. I even got the latest version of DVDfab with no success. Any suggestions? Is there a newer version of VobBlanker out there?

Evidently the movie that AnyDVD cannot backup doesn't exist afterall. Glad you got it sorted.

@bhowes
That should have done the trick on this and The Wild which has Ripguard on it too.
That's the latest version of VobBlanker.
No mutli tasking and keeping as much memory free as possible?
Have you tried RipIt4Me?

I don't have RipIt4Me, maybe I'll have to try it out. I used DVDFab to rip the movie to the hard drive then used VobBlanker. I have lots of room on my hard drive and I make sure nothing else is running in the background. I do notice that the buffered memory on Shrink just keeps climbing then when it reaches about 1.6 gig, I get the prompt that I have ran out of memory. I'm going to try defragging and see if there's any difference there. I had no problem with Lucky Number Sleven so I'm surprised with these last couple.

Lucky Number Slevin was just CSS protected and a few invalid vob's. Now the other 2 have much more protection on them. But yes they can be backed up.
It sounds like Shrink may be hanging on a bad file. When you ran VobBlanker did anything come up as 'skip' - if it did choose the process all button.
See if the defrag helps.
Try RipIt4Me - one way I backed up Stay Alive. Also used AnyDVD running behind CloneDVD or Recode on the others.
Keep us posted.

Will do. It's been a long time since I've defragged so it's taken some time not to mention being a father of a 4 year old. Spare time is hard to come by haha. I have been trying to keep away from paying for any of these other programs but may have to resort to them if I have to ie. AnyDVD. I will let all know how it goes. I'm finding it hard to just let it be, I have to get this going.

@nitepeopl & bhowes
NOTE: "out of memory" is a well known "RipGuard protection," so you'll need to post process the already ripped VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker or clean the ripped movie via FixVTS.
Stay Alive, The Wild, Proposition, Friends with Money, Lucky # Slevin are NOT that hard to rip and backup. As usual I used nothing, but "DVDFAB Decrypter + Vobblanker", encoded it with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70, backups came out perfect.
Either you guys are doing something wrong, missed a tiny step or have other engines that comflict each others running in the background. Let's start from beginning and give it another shot and I suggest read the guides steps by steps carefully.
Give "DVDFAB Decrypter" http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154
or "RipIt4Me" http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110 guides a try and see if it solves the issues.
Good luck and happy burning.

OK I've now sucessfully ripped and transcoded both "bad" disks. Yes the fan being plugged in as it is supose to be did the trick! As far as the first PC I feel it had to do w/ a bad hard drive because files have dissapeared lately and the last disk I did get to burn had video pieces randomly mixed it that were all on the drive sometime it the last year. I'm gonna have to take care of that later.
Now burning ahh it sounds so simple....I've already made 3 coasters when I tried folder2iso and decrypter to burn, so then I tried Nero-video dvd, and I put everything where it needs to go and I got a DVD that will play perfect on my PC but thats it. It won't play in a standalone or my xbox.
Before my only DVD burner was on my mac so I would grab the Video and Audio ts folders over the network In Toast select Data and udf, drop in the TS folders and burn. Those ones play everywhere. I'm still using the same madia too? Maybe someone can suggesta more compatible way to burn, I don't mind paying for an app too if it works.

Thanks Alkohol!!
I did all the steps in your very useful guide but was still getting the same error. I will try it again tonight when I get home but this time I'll pay more attention to what I'm doing with Vob Blanker. I might be missing a step.
Excellent guide, I have seen it before and found it to be very useful. It's what got me using Vob Blanker instead of DVD Remake.
Thanks again!

thanks I think I'm just inches away at this point, I am running an older (6.3.1) free ver of Nero now, and it did not have UDF "options" like one of the guides I read. So I 'm thinking maybe if I buy a more full blown ver of Nero it will have more options so my DVDs are more Compliant?
