Trouble w/ Sony (MIJ) burning

I apologize up front if this is a duplicate question, but I have spent considerable time looking for a solution to no avail.
I have been successfully burning w/ my hp 840b writer onto Sony (MIJ) DVD-R's for a number of months. Now all of a sudden, I can't. I have updated my firmware, but can't figure out what the problem is. The funny thing is that I can still burn to my cheaper TDK's?

Hmmm Sony's not burning but TDK's are. Ok - a few questions for you: What's error message are you getting?
How about the program you are using to burn w/ - which one?
Burn speed you are using on the Sony's? Using a new spindle of the Sony's maybe w/ a different rated burn speed?

I am using DVD Decrypter at 4x speed. I'm approximately 1/4 through the spindle.

Looking like this drive doesn't like media or you got a bad batch.
The Sony's were made by Taiyo Yuden which is great stuff.
May not help but try burning the iso w/ ImgBurn. Free and by the same guy that did Decrypter.

Relatively new spindle, but have had some successes. Had problems with the end of the last spindle, though.

Tried ImgBurn. Unfortunately no success.
I guess I will try getting some new media?
DVD Decrypter is acting funny, though; even when it does the TDK's. The Device Buffer used to fill at approximately 86 - 88% and stay that way the entire time the DVD was burning. Now it jumps all around the place. I've read that it shouldn't matter, however. It's just different from the way it used to behave.

Dang well unfortunately yep looks like you should get some new media. Maybe returnable since a relatively new spindle?
Try Verbatim - another great brand.
The buffer I usually don't pay too much attention too.
You can check and make sure all your drives are in DMA mode (also look under 'current transfer mode - Ultra DMA should be listed there also)

Thanks for the link.
I have 2 Primary IDE Channels and 1 Secondary.
Under 1 of the Primary Channels I have Transfer Mode of DMA if available, but PIO Mode in the Current Transfer Mode?
Additionally some of my Current Transfer Modes say Not Applicable instead of Ultra DMA Mode 5 (or 2)
Should I uninstall the driver for the Primary Channel that has Current Transfer Mode of: PIO Mode?

The ones where is has 'not applicable' just means a drive isn't installed on that connector. You're ok there.
For the one that has 'pio mode' - yes uninstall that and reboot.

OK, I uninstalled and rebooted, which fixed the problem there (PIO Mode).
I just purchased another batch of Sony (MIJs) and tried again; no luck, same error message.
Additionally, some original DVDs that I put in the drive aren't being recognized?

For this drive I would try another brand of media like Verbatim. Your drive does not seem to like the Taiyo 16x made Sony's.
You should be able to exchange them I hope.
The dvd's not being recognized - which ones are they?

That's the crazy thing. I have successfully burned through 2 other (50 pack) spindles of Sonys.
There are a handful of original DVD movies that I have been trying to backup. Some new titles and others old. Sometimes I put the DVD in the drive and the computer / drive doesn't recognize it, and then I try at a different time and it does.

What was the rated burn speed on the previous Sony's? May be the difference. 16x is newer so even though the firmware is up to date on the drive some may still give it a problem. Depends on what media codes HP updated in the firmware. Taiyo is one of the best though.
Hmmm the drive acting funny - you can try uninstalling it through device manager then reboot and let windows do it's thing to see if that helps.

All Sonys have been 16x.
The uninstalling through device manager; I couldn't screw up my computer too badly doing that could I? I know just enough about my computer to be dangerous.

It shouldn't be a problem. I try to stick w/ the safe stuff.
Use the guide above for the steps.
Try some Verbs and let's see how that goes.
With the previous firmware - you still had problems?

Have you looked closely at the "made in" text on the packaging of the Sony -R 50-spindles? Sony stopped making them in Japan some time ago. All the Sony -R's I find in L.A. are now made in Taiwan.

I look specifically at the "Made In" on all media purchases. These do say MIJ and also have the white octagon spacer on top.
Incidentally, I do believe that I already uninstalled the drive to clear up my PIO Mode issue.

You might have just uninstalled the primary channel. Look like mid way I think in the guide - you go to the drive itself in device manager and uninstall the driver.

I just reinstalled the drive and still having recognition problems.
Yesterday I was able to backup 2 discs and burn them on my Sonys???
Now today I can't seem to get the drive to recognize that there is a DVD in the drive?

May be time to give HP a call. This is a newer drive and really shouldn't be giving you this many problems reading or writing.
You've used good media - the Taiyo made Sony's have yet to give me a problem even the 16x.
Might just want to check your connections - power and ide connector and make sure secure - even try another power connector. Can't hurt - may help.
Anything change pc since the problems started?

I haven't noticed any other problems with any other aspect of the computer since this started happening. I guess I'll give hp a call; it's been driving me nuts.
Is it possible to wear out a DVD writer?

Burn errors would drive me nuts too :)
Yep dvd writers wear out sooner or later though some it seems sooner than later.
Still check the connections and make sure all good there.

OK. I finally found the time and got the courage to call hp(I hate speaking to 1-800 support lines). They said that I have to back up all of my data and then do a full system recovery?
I can't believe that this is the only solution.
Would it be easier to just replace my writer? It doesn't seem that hp writers are all that great any way (not after this experience).

If it won't void your warranty, buy a new drive an put it in yourself. Although backing up your system is a good idea anyway - especially if you are going to work on your machine - it's probably cheaper and less hassle than updating your system, sending it back to HP, or being limited to a certain kind of media, etc. Get yourself a nice NEC 3550a or Pioneer 111.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
