I just installed xp on my copmuter and when the install was done i noticed that my local drive was no longer listed as "C" but as "E".Is there any way to change this without re-installing windows again.Cant load alot of my programs because C drive isnt my harddrive...it is removeable disc now.

this one is tricky to answer because if you change the registry keys the wrong way, your windows could not boot up, and if you do it also your programs may not load up, i am not quite sure what the exact keys are, i will have to do a lil research on it when i can find some time, but i do know that it is possible through the registry editor.

download the tuneup utilities 2006 demo, and use the "System control" program in it and change the drives and default locations. this should help fix your problems.

BUT REMEMBER, I ONLY GIVE GUIDANCE, BE SURE TO BACKUP ALL OF YOUR FILES BECAUSE I CANNOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS.

so i personally have to say that if you are not completely sure that what you are changing is correct, then i suggest leaving it alone and manually setting the install directory of programs upon future isntallations.

also, did you know that having your drive letter set to soemthing other than c is also an extra layer of security. this is due to lots of harmful software being designed to install on drive c, so if you only have a hard drive E hten you are more safe than someone with drive c. so give that a consideration too,

Phantom, there are far too many registry keys that point files to E. It would take eons of time to manually change them all.

The reason you have E instead of C, is because Windows setup will mark the first logical partition it sees as C. Whether that's a partition on a hard drive or a USB device. This can also happen if you install a new drive to install (without first partitioning it with it's own diagnostic floppy or CD) Windows on with a secondary drive in the system that has partitions. So....whatever the first partition is, that's C.

Ways to avoid this:

Remove any USB drives or flash keys.

A new drive - If you've added a new drive with your old one as a secondary, boot the system with it's diagnostic floppy or CD first. Partition the drive and format to NTFS. EDIT: or, simply remove the secondary drive until the new drive is up and running!

If it's a stand alone drive, setup should be able to partition and format the drive on it's own.

If you already have all drives partitioned when reinstalling XP, you can remove any partitions in setup. Setup will know what the first partition C was originally but keep in mind to choose that same first drive as C, because if you delete all the partitions, the first active one you create becomes C.

To make the story short (I know, too late!)...you'll have to start all over.
