ps2 v10 unmodded only reads 'blue' backed games

My friend has a ps2 V10 not modded that only seems to play blue-backed games. It won't play DVDs or silver backed games. It boots to blue-backed games very quickly. When I try to load a silver-backed game or DVD, it goes right to the browser screen. I don't get a Disk Read Error.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

lens is dead (for DVD that is, cd read will also die next), it needs either a lens laser alignment (fix) or lens change.

Thanks. I replaced the laser with a spare I had layin' around. Works fine now. I'm going to do the romeo mod next and then slap in a DMS4 se lite :)
