Is it possible for a DVD burner that has patched firmware to have the ability to burn DL disks, which was originally a single layer burner?

The Drives specs "say" it can after the patch

I suppose if the laser can output enough power, it can. What drive are we talking about?

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

loco,

You're so right. Those old litey's could do amazing things with patched f/w. I think there was even some patched f/w for some old 4x litey drives that would enable them to not only burn at 8x but enable them to burn DL media too.

Makes you wonder just how far ahead they were when they made the drive...surely a simple firmware patch made this all possible. The ability was there in the drive from the get go, it just hadn't been unleashed yet.

cheers

I'm still a firm believer that lite-on is one of the best optical drive manufactures. I luv my benq but can't say anything bad about my litey by any means. The only real advantage my benq has over my litey is that it is a little faster ripper. Burning wise I consider them equil.
