Hi,

I have got a spare HDD caddy and 40GB Maxtor HDD from upgrading my PC and decided to use USBExtreme software to play my games off my 'fat' PS2 which is 2 - 3 years old.
I did not want to mod my PS2 in any way or mess with Swapmagic etc so i thought USBExtreme was perfect (yes i know what HDAdvance is).
Checked out their site and can see:

"Supports All Versions of PS2.
No Modification made to your PS2 Console.
Will not void your PS2 Warranty."

"Connect and power on the USB HDD to your PS2 and boot your PS2 with USBeXtreme, when you see the game selection menu, select the game and press X on the joypad, the game will then run immediately"

Then someone mentioned USBAdvance which i was told is an exact copy of USBExtreme but with diffrent screens? So i got myself a copy and burned the iso to a CD. Copied a game from DVD to the HDD using the USBExtreme Client Software.

All went well, connected HDD via USB to PS2 and put in the USBAdvance CD. After a few seconds i get the message "Please insert a valid PS or PS2 disk"???????

I then checked out some threads concerning USBAdvance here and found all sorts of stuff about "having a modchip with macrovision disabled" or "use swapmagic then the CD will boot" or "edit? the ELF or something" to be able to get the CD to work.

What i am asking if USBAdvance is an exact copy of USBExtreme then if i had bought USBExtreme would i be having the same problem?? Would i have had to buy a modchip or buy swapmagic for it to work?

If that's the case then i think www.hdadvance.com are falsely advertising the product.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

you can't boot a backup/burned disk without some kind of modification so, that's your first problem. The "no modification required" part of what they say applies to actually buying the product as it is a pressed disc and the ps2 would boot it up as an original disc and therefore they are not falesly advertising their product. If you want to use a burned copy of usbadvance/extreme you'll need a modchip or swap magic.

NTSC DNAS threads.

So it's like having an original PS2 game and a Copy?
So if i had a modchip installed the USBAdvanceCD would boot!

Quite defeats the object then.....

Thanks WEStar, so i shouldn't have any problems with USBExtreme then. Will buy myself a copy asap.

USBAdvance is for ppl who have modchips/swamp magic. USBextreme is a pressed disk so it will boot right off. But I would rather get HDAdvance which u plug in a internal hdd and a network drive and boot the software, becuase USBExtreme sucks it doesnt support alot of games.

yeah I have a external 160gb hard drive but knowing that I couldnt use hd advance with that I just oredered a 120gb internal for 30 bucks shipped and ordered a hd advane instead of the usbextreme, I thnk those are mostly for slim models since they dont have the network port the fast versions have.

Bought USBExtreme and played it with DragonQuest 8.
NO WAY IS THAT SAME AS CD/DVD SPEED!! The Loading graphics are so choppy i had to wait 5mins for the game to start!
As soon as gmaeplay started though it was fine.
I think i'll be better of with an adapter and HDAdvance, but HDAdvanceUK have told me Sony are not making the adapters anymore!!!

Side Question - Why doesn't HDAdvance/USBExtreme play PS1 games? Wouldn't that be easy enough?
